back to article BNP pleads for cash after reported DDoS assault

The website of the British National Party is back online following a reported distributed denial of service attack over the weekend. Nick Griffin, leader of the far-right political party, is appealing for £5,000 urgently to purchase hardware and servers to keep the site online in the run-up to the European and local elections …

    Really?

""BNP website [was] taken offline in largest cyber attack in recorded history" and of a scale seen only once before in a 2001 attack against Microsoft."

Not sure whether to put this down to sheer arrogance, complete petulance, total ignorance or just utter bollocks.

On the other hand, the BNP managed to get just over 5% of the vote in the london mayoral elections... I doubt that 5% of the people of london actually believe in their policies, most of those votes will be protest votes because all of the major parties have disenfranchised them in one way or another. Take away those, and the BNP will only have a small hard core of followers.

If the major parties would stop being so sleazy and self serving then parties like the BNP wouldn't even register in the grand scheme of things.

  43. Anonymous Coward

It's just one bunch of fascists attacking another...

Whereas I have no time for the BNP, I find this kind of suppression of free speech deplorable. Can you imagine if we ended up with a government staffed with people of the mindset of those who perpetrated this attack? What would they do to anyone with the temerity to publicly disagree with them? In reality they're just another brand of fascist.

Many would regard a diversity of political opinion, therefore political parties, as a sign of a healthy democracy, even if some of those opinions are rather unpleasant.

The sad fact is that there are people in our society who do agree with the policies of fringe movements such as the BNP and the Greens, both of which seem long on coercion and short on consensus, and who should be allowed to vote for whichever party they believe will best represent their views.

I object to those who have so little regard for their fellow man that they assume that we are all so stupid and ignorant of history that we have to be guided (by them, of course) for fear that we can't see how moribund most extremist philosophies are, and therefore choose not to vote for them all by ourselves.

If they were to make more of the surprisingly large number of criminal convictions against some members of the BNP's inner circle (for offences such as gang rape, armed robbery, and violent assault, rather than "political" crimes), or point out the lamentable attendance record of many of their elected councillors, demonstrating that representation of the people is not a priority for them, then they would arguably be far more effective.

Assuming this attack did happen, it seems far more likely to reinforce the beliefs of those who already support them, and get the sympathy (!) vote of those who are wavering, than to have any significant negative effect on them.

anyway, let's have the scale of the attack reported in the correct units: methinks that 28 million hits is scarcely likely to reach the dizzying heights of 40Gbps or more seen in proper, hardcore DDoS attacks, and if it did it wouldn't have lasted very long

  46. EvilGav

    Idiots

Everyone on here crying "Ha ha, isn't it funny that the BNP fascists got DDoS'd and are whinging" should probably take a step away from the keyboard and look at our *current* government, who have implemented more fascist doctrine than the BNP have even considered.

They've also brought in more laws that mean that, for example, a person of foreign descent (asian, african etc) being attacked by a group of "white youths" is immediately branded as being racially motivated, whereas the reverse is *never* true.

I have nothing to do with the BNP, never voted for them, never been to a meeting and as far as i'm aware don't know anyone of same, but the comments on here are more deluded about what we currently have as a government than some of the worst twitterings of the Daily Fail crowd.

Tracing the origin / originator of a sophisticated distributed denial of service botnet attack is usually pretty much impossible as the originator / controller will have carefully concealed their tracks.

This episode reeks of cheap publicity stunt - the aggressor paints itself victim; the aggressor paints the victim as aggressor.

Btw - Stop the War collatition experienced a website DDOS / email outage during the Isreali attack on Palestine - someone was clearly uncomfortable with the true horror of war being revealed. The attacker clearly wasn't particularly clever because simple mirroring across freely donated virtual hosting and round robin DNS solved the issue.

Sorry Lionel, exactly what are you proud of? The only things that have been done in the name of being white are discriminatory to other races. What does it actually matter what colour you are and how can you be proud of it? Actually one of the stupidest things I've seen on here, the idea of being proud of something that you have absolutely no control over and that hasn't actually caused anything good to happen is ridiculous.

Gav, whoah whoah whoah, racially motivated violence laws were brought in because minorities were set upon regularly for racially motivated reasons. It might need a review now, but I think in general the courts are actually pretty good at determining what is racially motivated. I also don't see how it is fascist to put through a law that protects minorities, if you could explain that I'd be happy to approach it with an open mind. If you can give some examples of the other fascist laws that the government have put in place. I'd say that we're leaning towards police state, even if I don't think it's nearly as close to it as some people make out, I do feel strongly about the erosion of rights (across the board), but to compare the government to the BNP is not just naive it's utterly stupid. The BNP are quite clearly racist fascist idiots, whereas the government, while doing some silly things are nowhere near them in terms of hate, violence, or lies. The email in the article should confirm that alone. You actually fail worse than the DF crowd because you sound more like the BNP than you realise. So whether this was DNS poisoning, or a screwup when they moved ISP, I leave to the tin-foil hat brigade. However my gut tells me it was the latter.

The ones that did resolve an IP address came up with (the old) 87.117.239.66 - a reverse lookup on that IP couldn't resolve anything, which further suggests that the adminstrators there are numpties who couldn't hit any key to continue...

Not that it makes a lot of difference, but I feel like adding a bit.

@Subtilior - are you deranged, or was it a poor attempt at irony?

Politics is mostly all bullshit anyway, party politics more so. I'm really not sure whether I'm right wing or not.

I like to think of things from a "survival of the species" perspective, in which case diversity is paramount. For diversity you need a kind of venn diagram type approach to segregation, I think this is a fairly natural process anyway so you don't really need to do anything to encourage it.

The whole keeping blacks/whites/asians etc. apart thing is not going to help diversity and neither is the other extreme, which I'm not exactly sure how or why anyone would try to achieve anyway.

As for the story, I'm not really sure how it came about, is it a case of the BNP considering that all publicity is good publicity? They draw attention to their opponents, their opponents don't really seem to come out of it too badly anyway, even with the allegations the BNP make. Really odd. It just makes me think the spokesman or person giving the spokesman the orders just has some kind of mental deficiency. I'm pretty sure that if it were genuine and there was some kind of attack of the magnitude they suggest the news wouldn't just be coming from the victim and there would be other sources. Most likely there would be one or more hacking groups trying to claim responsibility too?

"WHITE WORKING CLASS SCUM will be swept away by a future BNP government." - Simon Smith

I'll admit to being ambivalent on this one. My lack of sympathy for them stems not just from the fact I disagree with them but that they do not even share the basic ideals of equality and tolerance that make democracy possible. However vehemently most groups in the UK disagree most draw the line collectively at advocating discrimination and violence against opponents (let alone practicing it as the BNP have in the past). Much as it chokes to say it however I still believe the devil should have the benefit of law. As long as they aren't breaking any laws they should be afforded the same rights as the rest of us including freedom of speech.

Can't be bothered to read all of the above...

...but just in case nobody actually corrected the mistake. The BNP are not far right. They are left of centre. They are also authoritarian. Left and right is about economics. The other aspect of a political position is liberty or authority. i.e. libertarian or authoritarian. It is extremely authoritarian to force people of a certain ethnic origin to leave this country and not be allowed to come back. It is racist to classify people according to race. A racisit philosophy is an authoritarian one.

Far right means you want everything to be about money. Far left means you want everything to be about socialism. They are both extreme positions and usually not represented by political parties. More likely a man by himself will be extremely left-wing or extremely right-wing. And then on top of that he will be either a liberal or an authoritarian.

Hitler was pretty socialist and therefore left of centre. His policies and thoughts were generally about social engineering and dividing up populations and making / forcing people to do what he wanted. This is an authoritarian socialist position. Not a free-market libertarian position. Rather than saying "you people can live here if you want and the following services are available if you pay for them..." - that would be a partly right-wing position. He was actually saying "you people cannot live here and I am moving you out" - that is social engineering, which is socialist, which is left-wing and because he enforced it, it was also authoritarian.

Both Hitler and the BNP are authoritarian and so is the UK government. Most regimes require something from their citizens so they are always on the authoritarian side of the spectrum. Then they are either left or right according to their economic policy. So what is extreme about the BNP is that their whole political agenda is based on uprooting certain kinds of people and moving them out of this country.

Take the test for yourself and find out if you are like Hitler and the BNP or more like Ghandi: http://www.politicalcompass.org/test

Most people are left of centre and on the liberal side.

What cant people look at the policies and know which side of the 'pointless in modern 'laughable' politics' political spectrum they stand for.

Labour are the Right Wing nut bags, the BNP are the Left wing nut bags.

This is kinda a observation here before i get called racist, but its kidna a point that there ARE differences, in many cases black people are better than whites!

Hmm. What about the Kriss Donald case, for one? (five Asians convicted for the racially-aggravated abduction and killing of a white boy). The BNP were quite keen about making political capital about that.

Mmm. One has to wonder which version of recorded history we're talking about here? Real recorded history, or the version Nick Griffin likes to make up as he goes along, where the holocaust never happened and Hitler was a misunderstood genealogy enthusiast.

My guess would be the latter...

I like to have a little giggle about the antics of these idiots; it's nice to see the terrifying force of right-wing oppression reduced to such grubby scrabbling about the fringes, as long as it stays there. What worries me is that the discrediting of some representatives of the "main" political parties might allow these numpties to gain by default. Frankly, the world could do without that.

.....they got ddosed they described it as "the most sophisticated attack of it's kind, ever"

    They like these big punchlines.

Oh - and that was me. :-) In my younger days of course, would not dream of playing with bots now, I fear the retribution of reg readers too much. "String him up" "Hang the bast*rd"

Anyway - I was daft enough to get caught, all be it through some fairly cool investigations. If I remember correctly they moved to Clear Channel after the ddos attack, could be wrong though.

Result of ddosing BNP site? Eventually charged with breach of the peace against a computer, copped a plea. So there we go, even if they did get ddosed again (which is looking unlikely) whomever did it just needs to string the court process out a bit till the cops get bored and eventually cop a plea and get away with a slap and a fine. (assuming they get caught of course)

Whatever you gotta say about ddos attacks, if anyone deserves it they do ;-)

I understand where you're coming from but thats only if you're using the Political Compass. Although arguably a better way of categorizing politics it still only one of several competing models. In mainstream usage multi-axis models have yet to to replace the traditional one-dimensional spectrum most of us here were referring to. Either way the BNP are still a bunch of extremist fuckwits...

    National Socialist NOT Left wing

To Sam and the AC who cmame up with "they are National Socialists ergo they are lefties" you are so wrong it isn't funny.

The reason the Nazis came up with that name was to confuse people as to what they were, to draw people away from the strong Socilist parties active in Germany at the time.

The Nazis were authoritarian, and they came in denouncing democracy, but they had no problem with Private firms and capitalists. What they never were was socialist

    Here's simple for you

There seems to be some debate here centering on the rights and wrongs of launching a DDOS attack against the BNP, but we only have their word for it that they were attacked.

Before we continue the debate why don't we ask them to publish the evidence that the attack actually happened. If they can produce compelling evidence then fair enough, continue the debate. If, OTOH, they can't produce compelling evidence then let's stop wasting energy on this debate and start wasting energy into the debate on the rights and wrongs of claiming your political oponents have orchestrated an attack against you when they haven't. Of course I can't imagine that there was a cynical motive behind making these claims only a week before an election so that there is little chance that they will be disproved before the election. Ahem!

After all they must have some pretty startling evidence if they managed to trace the botmaster in such a short space of time. I for one would like to see the evidence that shows that they were hit by the biggest nastiest DDoS attack in recent times. I would like even more to see the evidence that shows that they tracked down the botmaster of this attack, and how they actually did it.

    ex-commies would be pro-BNP

    > Griffin writes that the "BNP website [was] taken offline in largest cyber attack in recorded history" .. The email .. claims that the assault originated from "eastern Europe and Russia" and was also directed against Clear Channel, a firm which reportedly provides billboard advertising to the BNP, as well as the party website.

I would have thought that the ex-commies would be pro-BNP as they would tend to undermine the current blair-bushite regime. Besides can we really believe him. A borked upgrade over the weekend being more likely.

I have personal knowledge of two such incidents. One was blamed on some fascist regime far-far-away. The other caused free long distance mobile calls for the entire weekend. They were both down to a flakey system, failed upgrades and incompetent staff.

The political spectrum stretches from Fascism on the extreme right to Communism on the extreme left, with the middle ground occupied by various flavours of social democrats. Dictators, despots and megalomaniacs are, predictably, completely off the scale.

BNP is far left, nothing to do with the right...

The problem for the traditional left:

EG. Labour party, LibDums, BBC, Mirror, Grauniad, etc.

Is that they do not want the great unwashed to realise that their theories are not THAT different to those of the BNP.

Add the European Commission to the above list, and you have a neat list of the fascist leftie political organisations operating in the UK. Those that shout loudest about what they are NOT are usually hiding something.
