    Hmmmm Tricky one that!

    Save the Economy (AKA line thier greedy mega corp pockets with all that new funny money)

    and give every living thing on the Planet CANCER!

    or

    pull the plug and ensure the entire world population :

    a: lives a long and productive life (subject to local geo-political situation).

    b: can now afford to buy food instead of wasting all thier meager cash on yapping on about what utter drivel was on TV last night to thier mums.

    me! i'll go for the plug pulling anyday, beats beating off to mobile tv and any other pron junk they try to push on the mass stupidity of humanity via the has been of mobile phone technology.

    Bad timing?

    Unfortunately deregulation at the moment probably reads as "we want to make as much money as those *ankers in the *anking and finance sectors with equality of opportunity regarding big governemt bail-outs after the fact."

    I'd also guess that there are quite a few from the *anking sector in need of bonus replenishment and where else is better to go but the buoyant mobile market?

    tech regulations are inappropriate

    IMHO, regulating what specific technologies are used for cellular voice or broadband is quite inappropriate. At present, EVDO is being used in situations where WCDMA would simply not work (either too little spectrum, or WCDMA just too expensive). In the medium term LTE should be the tech to look for. But mandating it is also bad -- think 10 years down the road, companies could be "stuck" with LTE by regulation when there's technologies allowing faster, cheaper data service available basically everywhere else.

    Sure, fine, but...

    ...on condition that the mobile operators drop restrictions on running 3rd-party apps on their networks, too. Blocking sites, throttling bandwidth, de-prioritizing traffic, imposing inane T&C on subscribers, squeezing unfair revenue shares out of content providers... we've seen it all.

    Spectrum deregulation is fine if it's balanced with regulation that ensures the ensuing benefits are passed on to the little guys, the real innovators. Relying on the operators' supposed benevolence is just wishful thinking.
