back to article El Reg spymobile snapper nailed on Street View

It was kind of inevitable that at least one of El Reg's tireless Google Orwellian black Opel spotters would, in the line of duty, end up nailed on Street View. To recap, we asked readers to supply photographic evidence of the search monolith's privacy-busting activities around the UK, which we slapped into our Web 0.2 …

    Nice use of the autoblur.

Obscuring the "Magners" sign while leaving the face next to it fully visible as it does.

Have Magners not paid their Google tax this week or something? Hmmm, no "sponsored link" when googling "magners", maybe this is Google Blackmail 0.1 (Beta) at work?

    So, given his name

was he looking for all spycars great and small then?

    And still

Google appear to be giving Stoke-on-Trent a wide berth. Take a look at the map if you don't believe me...

"OK, we'll just go up the middle of the country and, oh, Stoke-on-Trent, err, perhaps we'll go round there..."

    Trippy

The circle feels incomplete. We need a further set of images taken by a third party, which include both the Google car and The Register's photographer, and a further set of images that include the Google car, The Register's photographer, and the third party, and a further set of images ad infinitum, until everyone is recorded. At which point the earth will disappear in a blazing, blinding flash of light, like V'Ger from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

If only The Register's photographer had held up a mirror. Or a sign with "WHY?" written on it. Either of those things might have caused Google to blow up, like in that episode of The Prisoner with the computer, you know the one.

    I was thinking about this....

and why are the Police not up in arms about this ,since they seem to delight in bullying individual

photographers who take photos of public buildings ?. Oh yes I get it, the bully police only bully the small people and Google are to big for them as they would probably retaliate and win.

The Google favicon is something different.

Incidentally, I hate the Google favicon.

Failed to find anything interesting on Streetview UK myself, though googleflying down Eversholt Street I came across a guy sleeping on a bench in the middle of the day, while just across the street a candid shot of a young schoolgirl excitedly peering into the darkened windows of an "adult entertainment" establishment.

No Streetview just Virtual Earth "Bird's eye"

We don't have Street View in this part of Canada (not sure if it's anywhere here) but imagine my surprise when I was looking up a phone number on canada411 and clicked on Bird's eye of in the Virtual Earth map in the sidebar. I wondered why there was a helicopter and then a few different planes circling endlessly a while back....

Had to look up my number and see what there was.

The picture isn't high enough resolution to see if it's me, or one of my kids in the shots, but there are people in the driveway. The pix look to have been taken in a couple of different seasons, three views seem to be from the same shoot in the summer and the fourth looks like it was earlier in the year.

I had to look up family in Ontario and there aren't any pictures even though they are close to Toronto. I'm in British Columbia and I assume it's our proximity to Redmond that gets us noticed.

Bit different to Streetview but the same privacy issues I'm sure.

Hey, I can see your house from here.

AC so you can't see me not taking picures of the unblack helicopter.

Everyone here knows that Britain is already a "surveillance" society, with more cameras everywhere than any other country. You're a step away from Orwell's "1984" cameras inside your homes. So Google taking pictures offends you how? It's more like a whore crying rape, when the real cry should be "dining & ditching" ... you Brits just want to be paid for being snapped by a private company, although Google may well become the framework for a world government someday!!
