For some reason " taken to an East London police station and charged" had me imagine them hooked up to the regional power grid.

Any chance this would be an unofficial recycling effort gone horribly wrong?

Hardly a professional outfit doing a job with 'substances' aboard. Too spaced out to hear the alarms?

    Go back to killing rats

You would expect this from level 3 burglars- the datacentre was clearly way too out of their league. Perhaps the physical training regimes in prison will enable them to level up a few times before they try again.

I'm wondering what's triggered the alarm

Access pass and a code required to get in through the front doors or the loading bay, then the pass to get to the lifts, a mandatory palm scan upstairs, access code and only then you're inside the colo area. Then you need another (different) code to the door lock.

    An insider job?

PS. I feel for the always-asleep security guards at the reception downstairs. Such an abrupt interruption :>
