back to article As nice as Pai: FCC chairman comes out in favour of Ligado Networks' 5G proposal, despite criticism from airlines and military

Ligado Networks, which is currently seeking approval for a terrestrial low-power 5G network, has won a powerful friend: Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chief Ajit Pai. The US industry watchdog has circulated a draft letter asking individual FCC members to approve the firm's plans, with "stringent" conditions attached …

    Who needs Huawei....

when you have the corrupt FCC taking down the military.

Still, at least it's US money.

If the lockdown goes on much longer, American industry will have to start laying off members of Congress and the Senate.

Nah, they'll find a way to pass a bill to pay them out with cold hard cash so that they can continue doing the important work of passsing bills to pay them out in cold hard cash.

    F*** the f-ing military.

    F*** the military.

If anyone in the f-ing world came up with something that would destroy every piece of tech the US military has today, I'd go buy stock in it right the f*** now.

    F** our troops. F*** the orange sh*tgibbon.

That said, I'd prefer not to interfere with non-military aircraft radar. That's actually kind of important.

Military? Let the f***ing scumbags crash and f***ing die.

However, a fair attempt. Please take note for further improvement.

Rabid yet curiously self-censoring at the same time. That takes some effort.

So, is it just the US military you f***ing hate, or all militaries?

And you realise of a lot of civilian infrastructure depends on those same miltary technologies you'd like to see crushed? GPS ain't just for positioning. A boatload of things use it for timings in everyday life.

William Barr and Pai worked together at Verizon. Barr worked for a legal company that represented Lightsquared, now known as Ligado. So while DOJ may have objections, Barr will overrule those objections and push this through. Simple as that.

This just gets better and better.

Barr will overrule those objections and push this through.

He might try, but the various groups doing the complaining have cleverly invoked the SPAAAACE FOOOORCE so maybe Barr will be overruled in turn.

    Getting Pai'd

As corrupt seeming as Pai's edicts look, it really shouldn't be all that hard to see where the bribes are coming from if anybody cared to look into it. He is NOT managing the spectrum and telecommunication policies in the favor of the American public.

You could argue his predecessors didn’t either.

Not just in America but regulators and officials the world over abuse their oversight and positions for their own gains.

See Mobmentum for how they did that for a uk political party.

See the look on Stephen Kinnocks face when he realised Theresa Maybe hadn't won the 2017 election.

It turns out the worst problem the Labour party has is actually the Labour party. The various groups trying to bring it away from being the diet coke tory party have never been the problem, its the politicians who were more intrested in personal power over getting the Labour party in power.

    Real men do real damage

It isn't real predatory capitalism if you don't harm somebody.

Your profit-making must harm as many innocent people as possible, with bonus points for lasting damages and loss of life.

Else you're just a wimpy commie, and one thing you can't call Pai is "wimpy commie".

    99.3% reduction in power?

99.3% reduction in power? Per Google, they've reduced the power they are looking for from like 1585 watts to 10 watts. 1585 watts seems like a lot of power, and 10 watts seems rather low for anything with more range than a microcell.

    1. low_resolution_foxxes

      Re: 99.3% reduction in power?

4G is usually max 1W, typically much lower. Although for comparison a microwave is 1kW.

"Consequently, every satellite-based location technology [..] uses the L-Band"

So it's a done deal. And with the cretins in all the right places, there will be no opposition. Ask Trump to stop it ? Are there still people who do not understand that Trump will never stop money, especially buddy money, and even more so if he can get a cut ?

So it'll happen. Ligado Networks poisonous 5G technology is going to be implemented, and then what ? People will complain that their GPS doesn't work. People never care about much, but when they are personally inconvenienced, that changes and the dial can get cranked up rather high.

Ligado Networks is going to find itself under fire from the popular opinion, and there's no one to bribe there. GPS is not new tech, it is firmly entrenched. People have been using it for years and know how it works and, more importantly, that it works. To have a 5G antenna and suddenly no more GPS is a coincidence people are going to notice, and people will get mad about it.

You're not going to convince a red-blooded American consumer that his GPS needs to replaced when he bloody well knows that it is not his GPS that has a problem.

I'm beginning to think that Ligado Networks has not thought this whole thing through.
