back to article Sysadmin Day 2007: still time to get the beers in

Yes, ladies and gentlemen: it is Sysadmin Day. A day when we should all take a moment to give thanks to the glorious sysadmins (and their pimply-faced assistants) who keep our techno-world rolling. Take a moment to give yours a hug. Or, if you really want to show your appreciation, a beer and some pizza. For without …

    A little late...

Would it have been to much to ask that this story broke say, yesterday? How will us sysadmins and pfy's get our deserved pizza's and beer with only half an hour left on Friday?

  2. Ian

    Nice Idea.

    Everyone e-mail him/her simultaneously.

  3. CJ

    I agree

...with Xander, complete lack of planning. I demand a free El Reg paper hat

Shit man, are you telling me that Sysadmin day is already fading away to obscurity? Honestly I am not that surprised.

    Pfft

If yo had of posted that yesterday I could have emailed all my clients this story and signed it "the invisible bloke who keeps your crappy cheap servers running"

and MAYBE had less of a shyte day sorting all the cr@p that they had left till the end of the week so they can slope off early

    "Everyone e-mail him/her simultaneously."

Would never work - any sysadmin worth his or her salt will have their mail-filter set up so that anything from the lusers goes straight into the bit-bucket :-) Beer and pizza is fine by me though ...

    Our hardware celebrated

With 8 simultaneous disk failures on utility systems. Nothing that interrupts service, but every box that does anything for *US* lost at least one drive.

    Hmm...

Time to pre-emptively bribe our beloved BOFHs and PFYs with a pint or ten of the finest Lager in the pub... so they won't delete our porn... er... fileshares...

    I'll get me coat.

  13. Sampler

Got taken to the pub myself...

At lunch and after work - not paid for single pint all day.

Was my review and nothing short of being showered with praise

Now if my boss had known it was sysadmin day I guess it would have lessened the inebriated respect I have for him.

Oh well, shame I'll be sober first thing monday =D

Does *any* UK non-sysadmin know about this day?

I don't know about you, but here in the UK this supposedly "international" Sysadmin Day is 100% unknown by any non-sysadmin I've ever come across (yes, including my colleagues). I'm sure a lot of people have heard about Secretaries' Day (or "Administrative Professionals Day" as Ugly Betty recently pointed out) even in the UK, but this Sysadmin Day thing has been running 8 years now and it's still completely non-existent to the vast majority people in the UK.

Am I the only one who thinks that this never really left the US, having being invented - and seemingly stayed - in that country only?
