back to article Russia signs Huawei deal as Chinese premier decries 'protectionism', 'unilateral approaches'

Huawei has signed a contract to develop Russian 5G networks for mobile provider MTS over the next two years. The deal was signed on the sidelines of a Kremlin meeting between Russian and Chinese leaders Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping. Xi said, according to NPR: "Protectionism and unilateral approaches are on the rise, and a …

Good luck with that. For me and, I'm sure, a lot of other people, the situation is very clear : Trump wants to dominate China in every way he can, whatever the cost.

That Bloomberg went and destroyed its reputation to give Trump an excuse is shameful, but it has never been about National Security, that we all know because the allegations have never been proven. it would have been easy to post a picture of modified boards, but no, nothing has ever come to light. No picture, no expert testimony, no corroboration from international bodies, nothing. A big, fat nothing.

And that nothing proves that the "intelligence risks" of Huawei equipment are just about the same as the risks with Cisco equipment, so basically choose your poison and pray. The NSA will get access if it wants it anyway.

I don't see the equivalence between the NSA and the Chinese Intelligence Services at all, at least from the perspective of the American Government. The American Government controls the NSA, whilst the Chinese Intelligence Services have a long history of engaging in large scale spying against the US and there is already a - so far - cold war in theatres such as the South China Sea and Taiwan.

The US Government, even under the infantile madness that is Trump, is unlikely to order the NSA to conduct hostile activities against itself, whereas the Chinese Government, if not actively hostile, then is certainly not very friendly.

How so? We know Cisco equipment definitely has USA government back doors. We don't know that Huawei equipment has Chinese government back doors, and we know that a lot of people are looking and haven't found any evidence.

Doesn't that make Huawei the better choice?

Except the intelligence risks with Cisco and HPE kit are proven (backdoors being removed by the dozen from Cisco kit and actual cases of NSA intercepting HPE kit and installing their spyware on it) and, at the moment, only theoretical against Huawei.

This Trump episode will cause everyone to doubt the US when it comes to not playing footsie with dictators, turning against allies, scrapping treaties, starting trade wars etc.

Trump will prove to be extremely destructive to the US economy and world standing in the long run, and like the lies about WMDs there won't be any way to take it back. Even if the next president actually IS stable (whether or not a genius) having elected one Trump no one is going to trust us not to elect someone like him again in the future, or god forbid, even worse.

Where Russia goes, 50% of Central Europe will follow.. This is not forgetting that China is also pouring massive investment into Africa and other countries throughout Asia and Southern indian ocean... that's a fair big ass for the Mr D Trump to get his tongue into!

Finally, I wonder if the US Administration has wondered why many EU countries are not towing the line? Its simply, they're looking to the future.

In all this time, with POTUS chucking his toys out the pram like a spoilt brat, Huawei and the Chinese, have refused to bite, instead they simply respond with mature and articulate reasoning. Whilst the US might get a short term win, they're pissing of they're allies and China is removing its reliance on US technology - So who win in the long term?

      Re: Herman

Hermann's words are worth taking to heart because I have seen it all before. The US has restricted technical exports before in the name of Cold War One. Quite apart from the annoyance of the overreach of US law (combined with the usual supine UK government) there were export license problems which just meant that you didn't buy anything from America unless you absolutely had to. In the early 80s the real problems started with microwave equipment; back in the day this all came from the US but once Regan -- in particular Richard Perle -- got in the act it became a pain to buy the stuff so suddenly all the new kit was Japanese. Then there's the whole encryption saga -- readers may not know this but thanks to ITAR regulations you have to get export licenses for WiFI access points that used WEP (one of the many reasons why nobody buys access points made in the US).

I honestly thought that after the end of Cold War One that all this stuff was behind us but obviously now we have commercial rivalry with another power its full on Cold War Two and all that BS from way back then (including many of the people involved -- Perle is still around) has got dusted off and it back to Evil Empires, Brutal Dictators and all the other BS. It will all end it tears.....

(BTW -- Back in those days if you bought a minicomputer from the US -- you really didn't have any other choice -- then it needed a US export license. What people didn't realize that to move that from one office to another, even if it was just down the road, you had to get another license. I described the UK's government as 'supine' because when the FBI raided an office in west London because of this the UK government said -- absolutely nothing. The Americans, aided by the UK, also thought they had jurisdiction over moving memory packs for small Japanese handheld computers between the UK and Belgium -- no paperwork's too much trouble for a DC bureaucrat and, as ever, the UK government was unable to tell its masters to pound sand....)

Yeah Xi and Putin, a pair of love doves to be proud of

Who are we talking about, two brutal dictators, both leading regimes with a bad track record on human rights, freedom of religion and expression.

It is hardly good publicity for Huawei, and it shows the more where they stand for.

Maybe the leftist/liberal/diversity rainbow people, who dislike Trump, should think two seconds more before they choose their enemy.

All of these treats guarantee a one way ticket to jail in both of these countries, with the technical expertise of companies like Huawei these evil regimes have powerful tools to permanently remove critical voices or other non-conforming individuals from society.

There is room in some minds for two or more dislikes. This is not a binary choice, so stop trying to polarise the debate. The fact is, as the late, great George Carlin pointed out, there is bullshit coming down the street from multiple sources. I do not have to like China's human rights abuses to dislike Arsenoise' global moneyed idiot dictator aspirations.

They're only 'brutal dictators' this week because we don't like them. Both societies are democracies; Russia in particular is a bit like other European countries. China's China -- its a different, non-European, society to the one we're used to so its not surprising that it does things a bit differently.

People need to get out more. There have been plenty of brutal dictators about but if they're 'our' dictators then they're just 'authoritarian governments'. Just parroting the Party Line, Two Minutes Hate 'n all, doesn't really add much to the conversation.

    Are you spinning this?

    The headline says "Russia signs".

The story seems to contradict it: the deal was signed by a leading Russian telco building a 5G network.

Isn't that the same misinformation that misattributes deals BT and Vodafone might make into a "HMG contracts with Huawei" headline?

    1. Warm Braw

      Re: Are you spinning this?

Given that neither BT nor Vodafone can operate a telecommunications system unless they do the government's bidding and they can't procure the equipment to do so without the government's sanction, I think you could argue they're about as independent of government as a Train Operating Company.
