back to article Still fewer Windows 10 devices out there than Instagrammer Kylie Jenner has dollars

Microsoft has confirmed that the company is still quite some way shy of its first billion Windows 10 users. Corporate vice president Yusuf Mehdi made the admission via Twitter, announcing the company had inflicted Windows 10 on 800 million devices. Thank you to all our customers and partners for helping us achieve 800 million …

    Highest satisfaction

It's all very well to keep trotting out the line of "Highest customer satisfaction", but how do they record this?

I'm very satisfied with Windows 7 and am very dissatisfied with Windows 10 - yet I don't recall MS asking me specifically about either.

Marketing lines are just empty wind without some facts/evidence to back them up...

      Ask you about something?

This being Windows 10 and all, Microsoft did as it usually does in 10, and made the choice for you. Yes, it seems that you are satisfied with Windows 10!

Amazing how much satisfaction one can achieve if the company doesn't have to leave decisions about things like, er, satisfaction level to the people actually using the stuff.

Well to be fair its the first time Microsoft have done customer satisafaction survey's for their OS and by getting it in now they can use the same marketting bull for Windows 11.

      Re: Highest satisfaction

      "how do they record this?"

They send an e-mail to insiders, who are 90% fanbois, who then participate in a survey, with the expected results. It's got to be a rigged survey of an unrepresentative sample.

And everyone ELSE (the non-fanbois) getting Win-10-nic crammed up their asses down their throats simply shrugs and tries to get things done anyway...

[it's how surveys typically get things wrong, ya know - a survey sample and/or questionnaire designed to skew the results for whatever reason, not be as accurate as possible]

So now the amount of OS in the wild will be expressed as percentages of Kylie Jenner? Obviously with suitable pix !!!

      Kylie Jenner?

      WTF?

The amount of "internet celebrities" I don't know who they are and why they are "famous" (and I'm not interested in knowing) is reaching the number of Windows 10 installations....

I don't know what disappoints me more? That someone who has no talent and was only famous from being on a reality show can make that much money. Or that Microsoft believe that we are all happy with the forced feature updates, telemetry, lack of customisation that comes on Windows 10.

    1. Anonymous Coward

Microsoft never said they believe we are all happy with Windows 10, merely that we are happier with Windows 10 than we have been with any of their other OS's.

This doesn't say a lot for their other OS's of course.

      1. JohnFen

But even that doesn't pass the laugh test.

Apparently she did spot a niche. Then it was underpinned by family big money. Those who have inherited resources will only go broke if they manage to get through it all in their life-time. As someone else proved - even having a casino investment go bankrupt doesn't necessarily ruin them or their business reputation.

There was a fictional story once of a man who was left £1m which he had to spend on losses in a fixed time. Failure to lose it all meant he would not inherit the family's vast fortune. He found it very difficult to spend - as other people kept refusing payment or they ensured bad business decisions were converted to successes.

Another story was the man with a very large banknote (£1m?) who had to manage not to spend any of it - by using its implied status to gain favours.

Yes - that is the one. I hadn't realised how many films there had been of the 1902 novel and more in the pipeline.

The "The Million Pound Bank Note" was a Mark Twain story.

I was recently forced into installing Windows 10 Pro... I built a new gaming machine and had no choice really.

Once you've locked it down as best you can, turned of everything, disabled as much of the snooping and tracking as possible and installed Classic Shell... It looks a lot better.

Don't forget to tell it you're on a metered connection, so you have control over updates... I decide what gets installed and when. MS can go fuck themselves.

Oh and it cost me £20...

    1. Dave K

I did a similar thing with a Windows 10 laptop I have, except that I went further and put the LTSC version of Windows 10 onto it, and I use WUMgr to gain control of the updates again.

It does work and isn't too bad, but it's quite frightening just how many 3rd party utilities, hacks and other mods are required to bludgeon Windows 10 into a usable OS.

      1. Sebastian A

And at the same time, how much 3rd party garbage needs to be removed first.

Seriously Microsoft... Candy Crush, on a PRO OS?!? What the hell.

    2. SWCD

Control over updates? Took me donkeys to find which registry keys and whatever else I had to hobble to make my machine stop rebooting when it felt like it :-(

During an average day I leave a load of Notepad's open with stuff I intend to file/email or whatever, lost track of the number of times I lost their contents. Could've hurled the thing out the window.

That aside, I don't mind Windows 10 at all to be honest. Definitely the most stable Windows I've used.

    Quantity versus quality propaganda

For generations, the concept of quantity and/or size has been put forth - particularly in USA, as more important criteria, even most important criteria than that of quality, and in some cases initial or long term value.

Years ago Chevrolet produced more Chevy Cavalier cars than did Honda for the Accord, yet no sane or knowledgeable person would ever conclude that the Cavalier was better than the Honda accord, by any measure.

Unfortunately, just as millions of Americans, and some in other countries blindly and nonsensically accept - without rational thinking the disjointed political philosophies and false concepts of those whom they wish to follow, millions of Windows 10 users "automatically" think that Windows 10 is superior just because of the 800 million number, and even parrot that figure as world’s greatest achievement.

Hackers, whether nefarious characters or even governments will continue to exploit the severe security and reliability weaknesses in Windows 10 or Server, simply because Microsoft and Bill Gates are American icons, and that no other desktop Operating System (OS) comes anywhere near 800 million users - which in most cases has little relevancy in intelligent, business or technological decision making on choice of using Windows 10.

Android and Apple iOS tablets have jointly replaced billions of Windows desktops in every area of technology (desktop type ) use, which Windows fanatics and dupes do not wish to talk about or recognize as reality.

If they are make this much fuss over 800M what are they going to do when Win7 goes EoL?

Given what StatCounter and NetMarketShare are showing for February, it looks like Win10 installs will be between 1.2~1.4 billion by this time next year; assuming the majority of those Win7 users will rollover to Win10.

Mind you, having a tablet that is in its final months of receiving Win10 updates - remember MS a while back did announce termination of support for some chipsets supported by early Win10 builds, I question whether with the Win10 figures we really are comparing like with like and that really the Win10 data needs to be broken down into build numbers.

    Bad numbers

The actual number is already well past 1B, it's just that the telemetry doesn't count bricked devices.

    I get it

Microsoft is impressed with themselves and wants their investors to be as well. Lots of installs! Microsoft thinks it has a big penis now and wants users to think if you convert over that you can have a big penis too.
