"Only four nations are thought to be capable of such a high-level attack: China, Russia, Israel and the United States."

ROFL. Trust me Aussie PM, almost every bedsit in the world possesses this capability.

But who would benefit from the overthrow of Australian democracy (other than the Australian people) ?

      The Kiwi's that's who .....

Yes, and here's a youth who has blogged about pwning a nation, very similar to Australia, actually extremely similar to Australia , just without the extra "a" and an "l" - this game playing geek helpfully provides the terminal commands for scanning your own country, probably not advised at present.

They're investigating Lauri Love's computer. He obviously did it, on kit the police have held since seizing it when they first arrested him.

Not via a back door, surely?

Surely those State Level Bad Actors didn't take advantage of a back door in a system somewhere? That would be ironic.

      Meh

As sung by "Bruce Clearwater Revival" (ft: Bruce, Bruce and Bruce)

Just got home from Canberra, secure the front door, oh joy!

Got to sit down, take a rest on the veranda.

Legislation kicks in, pretty soon I'm singin',

      .

      [CHORUS:]

Private user data, flowin' ... out my back door.

      .

There's a hacker doing cartwheels, a cracker gettin' good feels.

Look at all the data miners on the under-net.

A dinosaur politician, run' by superstition.

      Doo, doo doo.

Don't bother me with maths, kick-backs 'll buy my 'facts'.

^^ Not my best work, I'll admit

But it was 90 minutes past bed time, keeping myself upright in my computer chair because lying down made me vomitous (I did get whatever was disagreeing with me cleared not long after and got to bed, though! and I already have this-morning off work so could sleep in to make up.)

Nah. Now, if they'd mentioned France in the list, that would have been an insult.

    sophisticated state actor

Well that rules out Ronald Reagan as he's both dead and was never sophisticated, perhaps it was Dame Pantomime.

      Trudeau?

What's with blaming everyone else for your own failure to defend your IT?

It seems likely that the main state level bad actors were those who over-rode the security chap's recommendation.

Has anyone else noticed the rejection of "other people's stuff" as unsafe to use doesn't filter down into corporate cloud strategy?

    But but but....

Aussies have LAWS to protect them from this type of thing don't they? I thought they said not even the laws of maths could trump the laws of Australia?

    Personally I hoping

That the truth comes out. The state level baddies turns out to be a 15 yr old kid in the outer suburbs of Brisbane. Armed with a Dummies guide to hacking and a couple of scripts he managed to download.

Even better he socially engineered the account and passwords from the minister of communications

It's precisely because they won't use Huawei that they had the backdoored infrastructure.

    Dunno....

I thought the pollies were supposed to have quite a secure system. Specialised devices and all that tat. So it would be interesting to know which gullible mug piggybacked the payload in.

"State Level Actors" ... ie the clowns currently running the show ... and they're all pretty bad at mouthing the lines their puppet masters feed them :(
