back to article Script kiddie goes from 'Bitcoin Baron' to 'Lockup Lodger' after DDoSing 911 systems

A 23-year-old Arizona man was thrown in the cooler this week after he admitted being the not-quite-infamous website-rattling "Bitcoin Baron". Randall Charles Tucker was given a 20-month sentence Tuesday after pleading guilty earlier this year to one count of felony intentional damage to a protected computer. He had faced as …

Not quite a master hacker, but still needs a harsh-ish term

This guy may not be particularly dangerous, but anyone who deliberately attacks something in a way that harms emergency management needs to have that enforced. If the people running the system are right that operations were impacted, his little stunt could have caused real damage to many people's lives.

Also, how painful would 36 months without a network connection be? On the bright side, I'd get to avoid those boring e-mails.

Re: Not quite a master hacker, but still needs a harsh-ish term

Nothing with a network connection would technicly include an ATM, so kiss goodbye your ability to take money out of your own account from anything/anywhere other than a branch office of your bank during bank hours from a Human teller.

No email, no online shopping, no job resource access, no school resources that require you to go online to retrieve/interact with, no tv set top box/Netflix/Hulu/AmazonPrime/etc, no Youtube nor Porntube, no Wiki, no online mapping for directions, no online translations, no Alexa/Curtana/Siri/etc, nothing that requires "the cloud"...

He's going to find his life *very* difficult without being able to access any device with an internet connection. All those IOT devices are right out, a SmartPhone is right out, & any "smart" device is something with which he can't make any use thereof.

He is effectively screwed fifteen ways to next Saint Nuggin's Day.

Also, no phone. Since they took out much of the copper it's all VoIP even if it's not always obvious. So essentially he likely will have no 911 emergency capability either. That's harsh.

She should have had the foresight to get married and have a kid

Because we cannot separate children from their parents, right?

Oh, that's only a right afforded to non-citizens. Silly me.

Claptrap's comment is in reference to the ignorance being spewed by talking heads and unscrupulous media regarding illegal aliens having their children separated from them during immigration processing and enforcement of U.S. immigration laws. The procedure has been employed for decades but suddenly this week it's an outrage to some folks.

As far as this hacker is concerned he's getting off pretty easily in my opinion considering compromising emergency services of any city can lead to and actually has led to deaths. Add extortion to the mix and he should be doing a minimum of 10 years behind bars or more. Hopefully the other cities will be able to add contiguous sentences to the first one.

Ah, no. It is only under the moron trump that this has happened. Get your fucking facts right...

"I'm too smart and too good at what I do for old guys to catch me!" - said every 20-something ever. Wannabe hacker: 0. Old guys: 1.

Kind of a shame though...these days its hard to even search for somewhere to live without going online...half the time you want to lease a place and they direct you to their online website to fill out the forms. Looking for a job - also way harder. Looking for one with limited experience, and zero experience in over a year and a half...with a criminal record *and* this set of restrictions...he can't even work at a fast-food place because the cash registers are networked. Not that he should be handling credit cards or cash - extortionists aren't the most trustworthy types even when they're incompetent and unsuccesful.

What's the chances the "supervised release" will require an internet connection to contact the supervision authority?

    Combined or separate?

The story has me wondering if the city's internet/servers are all combined. I would have mission critical things such as the 911 system separate from the servers that have the city website and services. The same would go for police and fire dispatch/data services. If it only takes an attack on one location to completely mangle everything, it's not a good design.
