back to article Home Office coughs to stolen lappies

The Home Office said 12 of its laptops were stolen in 2007 - by government standards a pretty low figure. No desktop computers went missing during the period. The estimated value of the stolen machines was £8,200 - or £683 each. This total apparently included the cost of "ensuring that the laptops meet the security standard …

They should be barred from working with Children

Anyone that loses their laptops clearly has a higher probability of losing children. There are some risks I AM NOT PREPARED TO TAKE, so those people should be barred from working with children.

It is important that we protect the most vulnerable people in society, so this is an obvious way of helping.

    Or do you hate children?

Yours, Jacqui Smith, Minister for Hysterical Overreactions, Home Office, EC1.

    P.S. do the search

And petition after petition calls for her to be sacked, removed, demoted,:

"VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE' and accept the resignation of Jacqui Smith"

"remove Jacqui Smith as Home Secretary"

"require the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to resign."

"Remove Ian Blair and Demote Jacqui Smith,"

"demand the resignation of the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith"

"Sack Jacqui Smith for gross incompetence"

"Require the Immediate resignation of the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, over the issue of Police Pay"

"Require the resignation of the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith MP"

    Thumb Down

    Cost breakdown

Average cost of 'lost' laptops = £683 each

Total amount spent on securing all H.O. computers = £0.01 (that's "tuppence ha'penny" in today's money)

Total amount spent on IT *security* consultants = Untold Billions

    "Only" 12?

Ah, but out of how many? Losing 12 out of 12 is a lot worse than losing 12 out of 500.

    that's bloody good

I assume they have several thousand laptops. To only have a few nicked / lost is actually a bloody good ratio.

    Is it just me..

Or do you think that the government department responsible of technology and it's security should have taken a page out of the James Bond book by now and had them self destruct?

Wait, thats just silly isn't it

Mine's the one with the Pointsec manual hanging out

Gov? What about the banks/insurance/companies-that-hold-personal-info ??

Yup, jump on their back - the only reason that you are doing so is because the Gov HAS to divulge the facts... It would be a different thing if we had ALL Bizs divulge such stats. I think you'll find the results will be very interesting :o) Working in the private sector for over a decade, I can tell you that laptops go missing regularly, without a care for the info on them, or how much they cost.. At least in the Gov, they are actively pursing to stem the loss.

@Nemo - Excellent choice of encryption!

Mine is also the one with the Pointsec manual hanging out..
