back to article Under fire for its shoddy response, FCC finally wakes up to Puerto Rico

America's comms watchdog has finally started reacting to the dire situation in Puerto Rico, months after it was hit by a hurricane. This change in heart comes in the wake of fierce criticism from one of the regulator's own commissioners, as well as a formal report from the US government's General Accountability Office (GAO). …

Puerto Rico doesn't vote in presidential elections

And if it did, they would most likely vote Democrat.

Also, most Puerto Ricans don't look like they sail from Norway, which seems to be the Stable Genius' preferred complexion.

I think that explains a lot insofar as the current Administration's policies towards Puerto Rico are concerned.

Re: Puerto Rico doesn't vote in presidential elections

Trump probably considers P.R. as one of those "shitholes" he raged about, so P.R. will get the shitty end of the stick until someone uses it to beat a clue into the arseholes head.

      Too true. Easily verified. Also:

She also noted that FCC chairman Ajit Pai had yet to visit the island and called for hearings.

Pai has probably not been approved for "foreign" travel by the WH; also, Trump disdains the disruptive loser hordes on that tiny, offshore, foreign island. He did make an effort to bolster their morale by tossing paper towels to eager hands, but then noted that they were obliged to fix their own problems. They haven't, so he's not responsible for losers on a shit-hole island!

Proof that Trump considers PR "foreign?" Why else did he impose the offshore 12% import-export tax on them following the disaster. The San Juan mayor exploded in protest: "He is destroying our economy!" Now, to discourage PR residents from turning to alternate electrical sources, he's just increased the cost of solar gear by 30% with an import tariff.

Perhaps PR's people should read "The Mouse that Roared," except with Trump, he'd most likely nuke the island as a military exercise.

The FCC, FTC and SEC are a joke

These government entities are a waste of tax payer money. They are so incompetent that they should be held accountable for the damage they impose on the populace.

    What Trump said

Hurricane Harvey: "To the people of Houston and across Texas and Louisiana, we are here with you today. We are with you there, and we will be with you every day to restore, recover and rebuild."

Hurricane Irma: “We love the people of Florida and they went through something the likes of which nobody has ever seen before. We love these people, and we’re going to be back and we’re going to help them."

Hurricane Maria: "We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!"

    Pubic comment

"the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) finally announced on December 7 that it would seek public comment on its response to network infrastructure damaged during last year's hurricane season."

I thought Ajit Pai ignored comments?

    Buy Cheap

They are using the disaster to try to force residents to leave the Island, cripple property values, buy it on the cheap and then the government will spend billions fixing it, so the billionaire developers can now sell and rinse and repeat for the next disaster, profits first, people last.

    Stop

Why is the FCC being so slow to respond and why does it continue to resist calls for a hearing into how to learn from the response?

Because Puerto Rico is a "sh1thole country"?

I would be leaning more towards sh1thole capitalism, if there's no profit to be made then you get no money.

    To be fair

It makes sense that bringing cell sites back online isn't going to be linear, but become harder the fewer there are left - many of them are probably in more remote areas that are harder to get to, may still have issues getting electricity, etc.

"Many suspected racism on Donald's part: although a US territory, Puerto Rico is predominantly Spanish speaking, with fewer than 20 per cent of residents speaking English."

Even if El Reg gets its information about Spanish-speakers from reruns of Fawlty Towers, surely somebody here has noticed that there are quite a few persons in all hemispheres with Spanish as a mother tongue and Spanish surnames who are as pale if not as orange as the president of the US. As it happens, the residents of Puerto Rico are largely of African descent.
