back to article Sprint calls out Charter with chat-patent sueball

Stop us if you've heard this one; two telecoms heavyweights are headed to court over allegations of patent infringement. This time, it's Sprint and Charter who are bringing out the lawyers over allegations that Charter's phone service infringes on more than a dozen voice over internet protocol (VoIP) patents Sprint was issued …

Now, if we can only get Trump to disband to US Patent Office....

And just what has Sprint done with these patents all these years?

    Butkis. Nada. Nothing.

Instead of riding the wave of innovation they complain Charter has stolen from them, the greedy bastards have squeezed every last penny out of the legacy tech their network still runs on.

Patent law for the 21st century needs a serious overhaul in the US. Starting with a reduction in the term of exclusivity to no more than 5 years. Not to mention the complete elimination of software patents.

That is, if anyone really cares about promoting "the Progress of Science and Useful Arts".

Careful now! The concept of using a set of biological sensors mounted in a chamber through which air is passed, and then processing those signals in a poorly described biological computer of some sort is also probably patented.

Hmm. Most of these seem to refer to Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)

That's a network standard of exactly 48 bytes (or "octets" in telecomm standards speak) for low, constant latency transmission of voice.

    Who actually uses ATM today?

Don't US patents expire after 20 years? Have they been renewed?

Smells like a patent troll to me.

    US Patent system.

Take existing patent, say packet switched networking. Put "new" word in front, such as Telephone.

    Patent and Profit!

"are also trodding on the patents"

I trod, you trod, everybody trod, trod
