back to article Samsung was just Tizen – homegrown Linux again pitched at n00bs

Anyone hoping that Samsung would use its Tizen operating system to shake up the mobile market has again had their dreams dashed, after the company emitted a for-n00bs phone running the OS. Samsung ended up tending Tizen after most of the other participants in the LiMo Foundation more or less lost interest in the idea of Linux- …

    WTF?

    Eh?

Er, Android is Linux-for-mobile-devices and I don't think people have lost interest in that. All that has happened is that people have lost interest in Samsung's version of Linux as opposed to Google's version of Linux.

Samsung's idea for Tizen was to fill the perceived gap in the market between Android smart phones and feature phones with something which took fewer resources. The problem is that Android smart phones have gotten so cheap that the gap has pretty much disappeared, leaving Tizen as a solution looking for a problem.

      Re: Eh?

Samsung's idea for Tizen was to improve their negotiation position with respect to Google by having an alternative to Android

So from time to time they dutifully emit a Tizen device.

So essentially, they want users to spunk money on this dead OS, with no apps, so Samsung are in a better place with google.

        How about no.

      Er, Android is Linux-for-mobile-devices

That's debatable: the Linux kernel is only a part of Android. Google could at any time decide to swap it for something else, though thus far there is no real indication that they are planning to do so: Fuchsia doesn't really look like a replacement.

Technically they could, but why would they ever consider such a thing? The Linux kernel is available to them for free, and every time Torvalds and co. release an update they get a raft of bug fixes, performance enhancements, and feature additions available them without having to put a penny into R&D. Dropping Linux from Android in favor of a different kernel would be a stupid move for Google.

          Re: Eh?

The Linux kernel in Android is several steps removed from the master code, and most android versions are running ancient and outdated kernel versions.

Google just took from Linux the same way they just took from Java, and gave nothing back.

    Is this the same tizen

that just over a month ago was reported as being 'the worst code I have ever seen' and thus full of security flaws?

    https://9to5google.com/2017/04/04/samsung-tizen-security-holes/

and plenty of others as well.

If Samsung want this to be a 'noobies' phone and it gets pawned because of those holes won't that make those noobies think long and hard about going with Samsung for phones in the future?

Could this really be (yet) anothet footgun moment for Samsung?

Perhaps the Indian regulators will turn around and say, take this [redacted] somewhere else?

    Sasmung Software?

From it's smart TV's spying on it's customers, to it installing duplicate uninstallable software for every Google service, to it's woeful TouchWiz UI.

People don't buy Samsung because they make great software. People buy Samsung because they have great marketing.

people don't buy Samsungs because they make great software, or poor software. People buy Samsungs, because from time to time they make great hardware.

smart TVs spying on it's customers

Every so called Smart TV running Google TV and connected to Internet. Far "worse" than Samsung's early effort.

Every "Official" Android phone with WiFi or Mobile Data enabled.

Every Google web service and API and Analytics and YouTube

    Google Chromebooks

    Chrome Browser.

    MS Windows 10

    Facebook

Samsung is far from most evil tech company

    "for n00bz?"

That may be the case, but certainly not because of the hardware limitation. Heck, my 2 main work computer have less RAM than that, and comparable clock speed. My smartphone has about the same specs (a bit lighter on the CPU front) and still runs a virtie Debian that does pretty much all you can expect from a pocket computer. I don't see how hardware limitations could be seen as a bad point for the OS; quite the contrary actually: if it's running well on low-spec hardware, surely it's a sign of efficiency? (now Tizen may or may not be a piece of crap, but that's a different matter entirely).
