back to article Micron making mucho memory moolah

DRAM and flash fabber Micron had a damn good second fiscal 2017 quarter, raking in increased revenues and a $0.9bn profit on the back of strengthened DRAM and NAND prices. Here are the basic numbers for the quarter, which ended March 2, 2017: Revenues of $4.65bn were 58.7 per cent higher than the year-ago $2.93bn Revenues …

    Short supply...

So prices have been raised to gouge the market. Tried buying RAM recently? Some of it is 50% more than a few months ago :-(

    agreed

Yup, apparently the new CEOs have heard what happened to the old CEOs a few years ago when the memory market was caught doing this same chit. How quickly they forget what happens to gouging bastages (after a mere 5 or 6 years of getting away with it, making billions in profits).

Of course, that was all centered around collusion between manufacturers, so as long as they don't "coordinate" these jacked up prices with other manufacturers, they'll probably just keep doing it. It's not like we can just stop buying memory.

    It's a "commodity"...

and is therefore "subject to pricing by the market".

In other words, when the supply is short it goes to whoever is willing to pay the most to be able to keep making their toys.

Indeed, RAM pricing has been cyclical for some time.

At the moment all of the factories making RAM are running at full capacity and so there is a shortage of RAM. Word on the street is that extra capacity should be coming online over the Summer and that RAM prices will start to fall after that.

have to LOL about some comments above. Micron has lost billions over the last decade (8 out of 10 years) while their customers like Apple and Dell have made billions. The OEM's had no mercy for Micron during this period. Finally Micron is making some profits and you guys are calling it "gouging".
