back to article Russia accuses hostile foreign powers of plot to undermine its banks

Russia has accused unnamed foreign spies of launching a concerted effort to undermine its domestic banking system. Cyber attacks are being combined with fake social media reports about banks going bust, according to Russia's state security agency, the FSB. If you cannot stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Looking at their recent measures to ensure that Internet is critical infrastructure and their portion functions regardless of what happens I think they are not hoisted on any petard yet. In fact, I am not clear who got hoisted on what yet.

There is definitely a case of both sides rapidly escalating the conflict though. We went from attempts to influence the elections both ways (first the Panama release timed to Russian elections, then the Wikileaks one timed for USA ones) to open economic warfare. At this rate they will be nuking each other (hopefully purely in the Internet sense of this word) off the map in ~ 6 months time.

      FFS.

One can only be hoisted 'with' one's own petard, not 'on' it.

'On' it presupposes an object upon which one is somehow resting or supported - both of which, the object and oneself, thence being elevated, together. To be hoisted 'with' one's own petard - as written by old Shakey himself - is to be hoisted - thrown into the air - 'by' the explosive device one has prepared to bring violence to another party.

I think you mean something along the lines of:

      Pet, kattle, block?

According to the secretary of defense candidate in the US, "War is a hell of a hoot!" - it strikes me that Obama was saying a while back that there would be payback for the Russian election hack in the US. Chances are that this is America's real masters (the CIA) sending a message.

What's the betting that a fish, wrapped in roubles has been delivered to the Russian embassy?

Really? Seem we had to fight your lot here a couple of times. The reason we have a White House, is that it was sacked and torched. Then there was the little fracas in 1865. Lost a great-great-grandfather in that one.

Fortunately we haven't had to deal with one lately.

'Do not harm the oil, and the wine' refers to when a coalition of nations led by Russia, nukes Yellowstone, as it won't harm the olive oil growing regions, or the wine growing regions. It also won't harm the crude oil reserves.

          Prepare against her the nations,

With the kings of the Medes, (Iskander weapon system, as Aleksander the Great inherited Media from Cyrus the Great)

Its governors and all its rulers,

All the land of his dominion.

29 And the land will tremble and sorrow; (nukes)

For every purpose of the Lord shall be performed against Babylon, (U.S.)

To make the land of Babylon a desolation without inhabitant. (radioisotopes, ash fallout)

30 The mighty men of Babylon have ceased fighting,

          They have remained in their strongholds;

          Their might has failed,

They became like women; (afraid, also gender 'confusion')

They have burned her dwelling places,

The bars of her gate are broken.

Biblical prophecy is not 'used up' all of the prophecy regarding ancient Babylon will be fulfilled against the U.S. as well.

Dunno when it will happen, 2024 will be 400 years for Babylon. Rather coincidental that y2k yielded nothing, as did 2012...

I guess they can't really blame it on the Russians.

    What about NSA?

I assume no rational adult believes anything said by the Russian government*, but one does wonder if Putin, playing with matches, hasn't realised he's standing in a potentially large puddle of gasoline.

I suspect that NSA likes to keep its powder dry, especially its capabilities for mischief - or even outright offensive action. But there may be limits to the patience of an outgoing President.

Little Vlad likes to swagger about with his shirt off and, given his regime, it seems likely no one speaks truth to power - so he lies and lies, and then lies some more even when, like the MH10 shoot-down, he's caught with his hands in the cookie jar. The guff about banks is quite probably just more lies intended for domestic consumption.

What happens, though, if Obama gets ticked off by the constant adventurism and lies, and in particular Russia's meddling US politics? It's entirely likely that if the US cyber-retaliated, the Russian state could be severely crippled. It would make Putin's current BS look lame indeed.

I think our little KGB weasel should be more careful.

    * Yes of course that excludes Trump.

    The Trump Technique

Is this another Trump accusation, where an organisation accuses others of doing the exact thing it is doing?

Seems to be a big part of Russian strategy in general, so it wouldn't be surprising.
