back to article NBN HFC scaled down to stave off financial disaster

DOCSIS 3.1 might one day give gigabit to HFC customers on the National Broadband Network, but not to as many customers as promised: nbnTM is scaling back the number of customers connecting on the former Telstra and Optus networks. With Canberra's equity contribution coming to an end this year, the company's decided the cable …

    So their solution is ...

To take an already obsolete, less than scalable, compromised, politically neutered, fourth rate network design ... and downgrade it.

'Mr Broadband' must be very proud of what he's bequeathing Australia.

You did notice that the original fibre hardware is also already obsolete didn't you?

    1. Frank Oz

Obsolete? Mmmm ... but only at 'the ends'. In other words, the devices capable of sending/receiving/detecting data over fibre.

The original fibre can be upscaled with higher data density (frequency modulation), more dedicated channels (colours) and upgraded protocols and multiplexing simply by replacing or software upgrading said devices. The same can't be said for twisted pair copper, HFC or any other medium the NBN is installing.

And as for those Node boxen ... well, lets wait and see how scalable, upgradeable, maintainable and repairable they are (in technical as well as cost aspects).

And my guess is that leaving a major capital investment in current obsolete technology out there, subject to the vagaries of weather, flood, fire and natural disaster, and indeed ever increasing consumer demand for more bandwidth and performance was not the smartest move. And we'll have 80,000 of these possible (probable) points of failure to contend with ... won't that be a joy.

Not forgetting the squeals of outrage and the AFP raid on Parliamentary offices of Senator Conroy which was completely against the law. Apart from being protected by whistleblower provisions.

Reminding you of the open and transparent operations under Quigley and Labor and the constant stream of inside information and documents that AFR and News Ltd had fed to them by insiders which they twisted and distorted to attack Labor and The NBN with.

No AFP raids as nothing to hide.

    Compare with the US.

Bloody lucky nbn didn't pay hundreds of millions of dollars for the co-ax that they can't use. Oh wait.....

    FAIL

End of the line for decent Internet speeds

    Who needs the future anyway?

People are really starting to realise the great con perpetrated by Toxic Tony Abbott, the great NBN kickback scheme. Spend 13 billion dollars on networks that were going to be scrapped at a loss and then scrap them anyhow, after waffling with fibre to the node and or hfc.

So what were the deposit in those tax havens worth 1% commission for all those lovely free tax dollars or more.

They are lying about the cost of HFC, the problem is the shared bandwidth, peak use is worse than bad ADSL we are talking down to modem speed, hence massive cost require to upgrade as the network.

The biggest rip off of Australian tax payers in history and still no criminal investigation as it all blows up in their face.

    In other words...

...after factoring in the costs of running power to all the nodes that wouldn't have needed it otherwise, as well as the higher maintenance overheads, it would have been cheaper to simply run FTTP after all? Well colour me astonished. Who could have predicted that? Apart from all the thousands of IT professionals who DID predict it, that is.

      Re: In other words...

And that's the killer - the opex costs of running the sooner cheaper faster network mean that they will never have enough money to move forward. Power is just the start. There will be flooding and failures under summer heat and battery maintenance and disposal and problems with lightening when the eld's trip and the cost of additional or upgraded wan side cards in the node if we ever migrate off national 12/1 adoption. As the money runs out they will have to start squeezing the rsp's which will drive the low usage members of their customer base towards wireless which in turn will cause the rsp's to decrease cvc commitments frustrating the more profitable users who will signal to the marketplace that they are prepared to pay for alternatives. The sad end to yet another failure managed out of Canberra will be the disposal of the network (probably to Telstra unless there is a generous foreign donor who catches their eye) for cents in the dollar. On a positive note, as this will probably take a decade to play out the NBN will remain a millstone around the neck of the LNP for at least the next few elections.

    Meanwhile in NZ

1000/500 service going live next month in most centres for $120 a month (NZ$ or AU$, pretty much at parity) and the FTTP rollout finished in a couple of years. That was after FTTN was completed back in 2008, so lots can have VDSL while they are waiting.

So let me get this straight, they bought their mates network, the ones that got them elected, one that was going to be scrapped at a loss and now they are going to scrap that network at tax payer expence, wow, just wow. Blatant in your face corruption, basically stole billions from the Australian Treasury to hand over to their mates for some reason, I don't know but I'd bet we could find out if we raided offshore tax havens for their banking records.

Mind boggling in your face corruption, not even pretending to be competent, just lying in your face, they know we know they are lying and they do not give one crap about it.
