back to article NASA peers through its SpeX: Aha! Jupiter's globe-warming hotspot

Jupiter’s Great Red Spot may be responsible for stirring an atmospheric hotspot into a frenzy, causing it to be hundreds of degrees warmer than anywhere else on the planet. Researchers from Boston University and the University of Leicester have published new evidence in Nature which shows Jupiter’s atmosphere may be driven by …

    Nah, that is just localized AGW caused by a dairy farm run by a bunch of rednecks driving oversized diesel pickups.

    That photo is just so awesome. (not the artists rendering)

    Can't they spend a little more time studying earth's atmosphere? Weather forecasts here are wildly inaccurate. They've gone to 'probabilities' now which basically says, 'we don't know, stick your head out the window'. At least on Jupiter the forecast is always 'storm' and 100% accurate.

    Hardly "gravity waves"

    Whatever the energy transfer mechanism is, it certainly isn't gravity waves. Something to do with tidal mechanics perhaps, but that's a completely different thing even though it involves gravity.

      Gravity Waves != Gravitational Waves

    Given this news, I think we should start a campaign and get NASA/whoever to rename the GRS to "Scorchio", in fitting tribute to the late, great Caroline Aherne.

    Civilization?

    Perhaps there was life on Jupiter at one time. Then the 'I'm not a scientist' Jupertiarion Republicans claimed there is no such thing a global warming crisis. After the GRS formed then they simply call it weather. And some survivors are still down there trying to keep their SUV's running.

    Can't get internet?

    If NASA can communicate with the probe and NASA has Internet, shouldn't it be possible to route it there?

    So we've ID'd the unshielded exhaust port?
