So we have Gummer and Rees Mogg facing off against Benn and Kinnock. Firstly, this eighties revival idea has dragged on too long and gone too far; secondly it feels almost as though there is an established political class who are keen to retain power within a few enduring dynasties.

I'm glad we have a monarch as our Head of State - I much prefer someone who had no more choice than who's womb they sprang from than some grubby schemer who genuinely thinks they're above everyone else and deserves to rule. Leadership is a burden - not a prize.

Re: We only need one dynasty - Ironically
Why ironically? Nobody credible has said that the Queen or her descendants wanted to leave the EU. In fact, prior to WW1, the nearest equivalent to the EU was the way that all the related monarchs could get together and "sort things out" - the problem came when people like Grey wanted us to oppose our close relatives the Germans in the interests of the French, who we had repeatedly had to bash very hard to try to keep the peace. For quite a significant period, and depending on how you look at it, Britain was officially part of Hannover or vice versa. And if the King of Hannover hadn't been mentally ill and had had more diplomatic sense, the American colonists might not have left the union.

John Selwyn Gummer
Wasn't he one of those twats who decided he couldn't stay in the Church of England when it ordained women priests?
Nice to know the Tory party is still producing progressive thinkers. And, once we're free of those EU shackles, we can go back to creating cheap cattle feed from scrapie-infected sheep. What could possibly go wrong?
