back to article Twitter: Don't know where hackers got those logins but it wasn't from us

Twitter has said it isn't the source of a database containing 32,888,300 login details of its users, but that it is investigating. The database, found by LeakedSource on dark web forums, contains one or two emails per user, their login name, and password, none of which is encrypted. LeakedSource has added the data to its …

      9-11-1961

Seeing as most were apparently Russians and others, 9-11-1961 obviously means 9 November 1961.

      9 November 1961:

      - End of Berlin Crisis and the stand-off between Russian and US forces.

      In less important news:

      - PGA (golf) amended constitution to allow non-whites to join.

      - Mach 6.04 reached by USAF pilot Robert White in X-15 aircraft.

      - Brian Epstein sees Beatles for first time. Signs them up in December.

      - Jill Dando born in Weston-super-mare. (murdered 1999)

Same auto-generated password for 10,000+ bot accounts, perhaps?

    Intentional

The main-stream media start publishing "password is dead" stories.

Then a series of high profile leaks occur in rapid succession.

The only rational conclusion is the leaks are intentional, to fuel the up-take of phone based authentication, with the goal of destroying the pseudonymous internet.

"contains one or two emails per user"

    - probably came from successful phishing attempts then.

As a number of twitter users use a third party tool for posting to twitter (e.g. for updating statuses on multiple networks at once or for attempting user control on a single twitter account) then it might possible have been a breach on the third party tool?

"Out of 15 users we asked, all 15 verified their passwords"

That explains how passwords were collected in the first place then.

    Dodgy wifi?

Searched myself (hence anon post) and found my gmail details from when I was hacked by using open wifi at an airport. In retrospect, foolish, but that was before that kind of attack was really popular (then everything went https and 2-factor).

On a ferry once, a whole number of people I know got their Twitter accounts hacked, presumably by wifi again.

There are a lot of people out there with Twitter on their phones/tablets and a lot of ways to steal their credentials, so it's not necessarily Twitter's fault.
