back to article Mozilla dishes up teasers for concept browser

Mozilla Labs is inviting industry wonks, higher education types and ordinary bods to contribute ideas on its new concept browser, Aurora. The outfit behind popular open source browser Firefox wants people to get involved in its “Concept Series” project, looking at shaping the future design of web technologies. Mozilla Labs …

    Surfacing?

The only surfacing I know about involves concrete, wood, stone, etc. Can anyone elaborate?

    Re: Surfacing?

the worlds of submarines and car design have their own uses of the word, but that doesn't help much either.

Is it perhaps a plea for someone to hack up some way to get Firefox to run on Microsoft's Surface?

    Surfacing

Not heard that one before, it must be a new addition to the management speak dictionary.

From context I'd say surfacing = bringing forward / announcing / suggesting.

Not that hard to work out. ;-)

    Concept browser?

If I want to browse concepts then I'll grab the latest IKEA catalogue, thank you very much.

As for surfacing, I think it simply means talking about things that you've been too nervous, embarrassed, shy or just plain scared to talk about. It's for the sort of folk who go around all day thinking "I've got this great thought for a future browsing project" while furtively glancing around at other people trying to find someone to tell who won't laugh in their face. The planned get-togethers will be full of people who say things like "Thanks Maureen for having surfaced that idea - well done!" while pats on the back and cheers will ensue. Never again will people have to feel guilty about their concept browser thoughts again. The world is undoubtedly heading in the right direction. The future, my friends, is bright.

    vapor and credit

is it just me or does this look like mozilla wants credit for whatever airy ideas they can have a pr firm conjure up in a series of videos, without doing any work themselves whatsoever, and with the possibility of absorbing any capital-attracting ideas that come up in the yet-to-be-released ones?

"surfacing"? perhaps that's a new word for what we used to mean by "shining"

    Stop

    Why only videos

I followed the link but didn't bother when I found there was NO plain text explanation and only videos.

Anything that uses videos just to explain its concept is likely to be doing completely the opposite to what most browser users need -- which is to show simpler, more functional and less distracting web pages minus all the annoyances like wagging dogs that twits like Microsoft keep putting not just on web pages but onto programs too.

So far, Firefox has helped by things like flashblock and noscript to get rid of the annoyances. But if mozilla wrongly considers it needs to use videos to explain the concept, then clearly mozilla has lost the plot altogether and needs to rethink what it's doing from scratch.

We don't have to go quite back to plain-text-only browsers, but lets have a concept for a browser that inherently doesn't support animation, doesn't support flash or java and has only a limited amount of SAFE scripting but not enough power to create annoyances or perform spyware with it. And let's make it absolutely mandatory -- if necessary, in the guise of Disability Discrimination -- for every web page that contains any annoyances or spyware to nevertheless be fully functional when viewed by a browser that doesn't support the annoyances and spyware.

And THEN we will indeed have some real PROGRESS.

Of course, you posted the link so I had to take a look - it's actually pretty well done (may or may not be NSFW depending on your outlook) and quite funny providing you don't take it too seriously. Top marks for originality.
