back to article BT: We're killing the dabs brand. Oh and can customers re-register to buy on our site?

BT is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its dabs.com acquisition by dumping the online gadget souk's brand and “inviting” customers to re-register their trading account. In a note to punters, the Brit telco monopoly confirmed that on 11 April it is taking the name outside to be shot, “moving forward with just our BT …

Sorry even though they have been running the show for the last decade at least they have been gracious not to shove their toxic BT brand in my face.

I have noticed of late that Dabs is very very light on stock. I wanted a few quotes for a NAS with Linux kernel and a few years ago I would have bough from Dabs. Now they seem to have two very basic models in stock of the name I want. Went to Amazon and there are a plethora of them running everything from Linux to Windows.

There is a difference between taking a brand around the back and terminating it with extreme prejudice or starving it then dragging its gibbering dehydrated body out and terminating it with a whimper and a moan.

I have noticed of late that Dabs is very very light on stock.

The corporate bean counters of BT plc will have done that. Because they don't understand physical retailing, they look at the WIP figures and blanch at the costs of capital tied up there. Then they tell the corporate appointees running The Business Soon Not To Be Known As Dabs to reduce their stock levels. As all the BT suits come from a culture that still reeks of public sector monopoly-entitlement, it never even occurs to them that maybe they know less than nothing about how to sell hardware.

It has all been downhill for the last five years (at least) with four years of losses, despite a big systems investment in 2012, and turnover in 2014 (last accounts) of £135m compared to £193m in 2010. With crapola stock levels and the rather unpopular BT brand I think it will continue to be slow death. The curious thing is why BT ever bought Dabs in the first place - what sort of fit was there ever with Openreach, BT Global Services, or the big "content" play?

          Re: Hell No

"public sector monopoly-entitlement" They pretty much replaced anyone with any nouse and control within months of floating. I used to work for BT before and after privatisation. After privatisation the bean counters they introduced were spending over £100 on their salaries for checking £5 of my spending. We were overrun by imported management the quality of which would make an MBA look efficient. They enjoyed the monopoly but to call it public-sector entitlement is complete and utter bollocks.

          Re: Hell No

Businesses like BT looked at Dabs given their existing online selling expertise which meant BT would not have to start off their own. Dabs, in its early years was a pioneer 'etailer' and this was the attraction to BT. No different to Insight's acquisition of Action Computer Supplies or Systemax buying Paul Kusak's business in Sheffield. Invariably, when big business buys smaller businesses the value on purchase diminishes as does the level of service while the return on investment becomes more acutely watched and monitored. If there's been a decline it service levels it should have been noticed before now.

Your "hell no" is 5+ years overdue. I stopped buying from dabs the moment they were bought by BT.

Nothing personal, but it took only a few months for the stock levels, availability, etc to go down to a point where going to someone else made more sense.

I used to buy most of my kit from Dabs, at one point they had a branch in Bracknell and I could just pop round to pick stuff up when I needed it. Then they consolidated up't norf but continued to offer a great service. Then they started to take longer and longer to fulfil orders. Amazon, eBuyer, Misco, even buying laptops direct from HP these days and it arrives the next day. eBuyer often has things to my house first thing in the morning on free delivery. Dabs can still be claiming to be picking your order more than a week after placing it online. That wouldn't have worked in the 90s, it sure as hell won't work now.

Notice to suppliers, you've got 24hours to deliver or you're about as relevant to today's business world as a horse drawn milk cart.

Haven't used them since they were sold, then.

Not "because they are BT"... yeah, I do do that but not in this instance.

Just that anything I've had them quote for, or anything I go looking to buy, I've obviously been able to find cheaper or better elsewhere.

Quite liked them "back in the day", but honestly haven't used them in years and stopped even bothering to compare after a while. A bit like Novatech. At one point I kitted out an entire school with Novatech gear from the servers to the clients. Last few years, they just aren't even close to companies that I use regularly.

I knew that I was right when I went to a new employer and their accounts department didn't even have credit accounts with Novatech, Dabs, Systemax (ah, Simply Computers!), or any of the others that I've used in the past. Not even historical ones. It seems all the old mail-order PC companies are dead or dying nowadays, and can't compete against pure box-shifters.

And, let's be honest, my specification for client computers has barely changed in the last five years. It's actually just easier to over-order at the start and then use "still in plastic" stock to convince people it's new. I've bought end-of-line products dirt cheap because they were still shrink-wrapped and met or exceeded our specifications.

Sad to see the last trace of the name going, but I can't say I'm surprised.

I noticed that Scan's retail prices are generally the same or slightly cheaper than corporate and Catalyst/Science Warehouse pricing from Misco and Insight.

I kitted out a decent sized PLC with their own brand kit and dealing with the boys then was always a pleasure. The boys now have made their money and I am glad to say that they richly deserve it.

I had one or two problems with receiving relatively expensive kit bought as new - but which had obviously been used already. Some smaller items weren't worth the hassle of returning when they failed almost immediately. Some of those were branded by reputable manufacturers.

Used to spend about GBP8k a year with them - but now its rare to buy anything in a year. There's just no compelling reason to upgrade. Most of my spend in the last couple of years has been on electronic components and Arduino modules.

          2. BinkyTheMagicPaperclip Silver badge

Never had much problem with Scan, about the worst is some of the daily special stuff, which occasionally appears to have escaped from a job lot of cheap surplus in China somewhere.

For some more obscure graphics cards, sometimes they'll refund the cost of the card 'minus wear and tear' some time down the line. This is less than optimal if you bought an expensive graphics card two years ago, it fails, and the proposed cost isn't enough to buy a replacement.

      3. BinkyTheMagicPaperclip Silver badge

Scan are good, I'd also recommend cclcomputers (cclonline) - especially if you want to buy a monitor, with their monitor checking service, and occasionally overclockers. Beyond those it's into specialist shops.

        Scan still going?

I'm always surprised when I see Scan are still in business. One product I bought from them (new) was an open box return with bits missing. On another occasion a call to their tech support was answered by one of the cleaning staff. A complete shambles.

I used to use DABS as I found them reliable and with reasonable customer service. That moved to a mix of DABS and Ebuyer as there were times DABS were cheaper than Ebuyer (even after BT borged them). Of late I've found the same as others here - DABS uncompetitive on price (and no free delivery option), limited range and usually no stock on hand so I've drifted away from even checking them for anything other than the largest purchases.

Bloody hell, I remember going along to Simply when it was 5 people in an office at a rented business unit in a Walthamstow industrial estate. I used to walk there after my night shift to buy PC parts. You'd wander in, up the stairs just find the first person who was free, tell them what you wanted. Invite will likely constitute direct marketing

What they should be doing is joining up with other UK companies, possibly in different sectors so there's no overlap in the products being offered, and creating a mega portal to compete with Amazon. For me Amazon is a necessary evil because I don't like the fact that they sell to a UK specific audience: amazon.co.uk but are not UK data controllers. In other words, they want us Brits to buy their products but they don't want to have to comply with our rights as UK data subjects. But they're cheap and convenient and I don't have to sign-up with companies and explain to them why they're not allowed to send me marketing just because it says so in their privacy policy. But I don't like Amazon and I'd much rather do business with a UK company.

I'm not happy too with the way in which Amazon only tell me that the items in my wishlist have been reduced; they don't tell me when they've gone up. I asked them about this last month and they said it was due to an error in the system so I'm keeping my eye on it.

A big plus point of amazon is they do not do verified by visa style totally iffy stuff (let's have a payment verification system that encourages punters to disable cross site script defences, who thought up that cracking idea? And as its lost password option means a crim needs just your card & DOB, then nicked wallet with card & drivers licence or other DOB data means crim can fleece you via vbv )

My dishwasher purchase from them did not go smoothly when I complained after the first few washes that it wasn't always getting things clean. Not a problem with my old one.Their reaction was to give me the number of their servicing supplier. It wasn't a help line - just an engineer booking service with a warning that it would cost me £100 if they couldn't see the problem.

One of the worst offences at Waitrose was when I was about to buy a large piece of Cheddar cheese from the deli counter. I suddenly noticed that it had a large patch of mould on it. The assistant scraped the mould off and expected me to still buy it. There was a time a couple of years ago when the checkout system overcharged me at least once a week.

Their "buy 2 for £x" offers can be a rip-off. If you include a "last day" reduced item then the actual discount is a sliding scale. It is reduced by the amount of the reduction in the "last day" item's price. The discount often ends up as barely a few pence. It bottoms out as 0.00 - and so you can be paying them the "fresh" price for taking the stuff they are trying to get rid of.

Their mixed "3 for 2" offers have a customer unfriendly algorithm. You only get a discount of the cheapest items. So buying 3 @ £5 and 3 @ 50p gets you 2 x 50p discount NOT £5 + 50p. Their phone helpline advised me I should divide the items into separately paid transactions - and that was a few years ago.

There's even a link still active for ex-dabs.com customers to login and become new EE shop account holders. It doesn't work, but I suppose its still a nod of recognition to any dabs customers who still remember them fondly.

However, the page being less than a bookmark remnant says more about what BT actually thinks about dabs and its customers in general.
