back to article Spare ship found to fix broken submarine cable slowing Oz internet

Alcatel Submarine Networks has dispatched the cable ship Lodbrog to service the damaged PPC-1 cable that's currently the source of a bandwidth crimp for Australia. The Lodbrog is needed because the ship usually brought in for Australian cables, the Ile de Re, was already booked to repair the Basslink power-and-comms conduit …

Papua New Guinea looking forward to this too

Having talked to one of the PNG telecoms guys last week at APRICOT in Auckland and showed him the news, he was very happy. They are currently struggling using satellite for the most part, which is rather expensive, has an increase in latency and a substantial reduction in capacity. When the news came out that the Basslink cable was out for a decent amount of time, he was not best pleased.

Now I don't have a map in front of me, but wouldn't the ship need to sail past Guam to reach Cairns?

    Under the Sea.....

    "...

    Under the Sea,

No little signals are coming to me

    Under the Sea,

    Under the Sea,

    Something has surely gone wrong,

    And it’s broke, broke, broke;

What is the cause of it does not transpire,

But something has broken the telegraph wire

    With a stroke, stroke, stroke,

Or else they've been pulling too strong."

James Clerk Maxwell, The Song of the Atlantic Telegraph Company, 1857.

    Ship visit

I live in Cairns, Am familiar with the dock area. Given accreditation from the dear old Reg, perhaps an interview/ship tour would be of interest.

      Re: Ship visit

OK, first we have a ship going from Taiwan to Guam via Cairns, and now I find out that Wagga is in Cairns too....

      My geography is seriously confused.

        Re: Ship visit

Who said the ship is going to Guam?

The fault is approx 4,590km from Guam, and on a cable route that is 6,900km long that puts the fault approx 2,310km from Sydney.

Cairns seems like a fairly good place dock.

    Lodbrog the Viking?

The ship is registered and re-named in Denmark as Lodbrog - I can't find any confirmation, but that's suspiciously close to Lodbrok, as in Ragnar Lodbrok, legendary king and Vikingr.

      Re: Lodbrog the Viking?

Indeed, Bumpy Cat, the very same, whose name is written «Regnar Lodbrog» in Danish. The old Norse version is «Ragnarr Loðbrók»....

    Fear not Aussies!

It won't be long until you're streaming cat videos and porn with the rest of us!

And the cable will be fixed in time to pirate a new season of Game of Thrones!
