Viviane Reding's plans to revolutionise telecommunications with pan-European spectrum allocations and a new regulator have been reduced to a new talking shop to be known as BERT. In other news

European lawmakers announced plans for a second new office, the European Regulator for New Industral Expansion, or ERNIE.

Mines the one that says C is for cookie, that's good enough for me.

    BERT...

Perhaps they could team up with the people who do the National Savings Bonds in the UK, and use their computer ERNIE..

That way, everyone will know without having to read between the lines that they're just a bunch of fucking muppets.

Safe from EU meddling - really?

    > Membership of BERT will be restricted to the head of each national regulator, and in theory BERT will review all regulatory changes made across Europe, but it's going to be about ensuring compatibility rather than imposing changes on the industry.

Who says what it's about or what it's going to do? Did Reding really get a figurative bloody nose over telco regulation?

If I were a eurofattocrat I would have to admit that even a real bloody nose would be worth the outcome Reding got here. Now the Europe-wide media-infotainment complex has its own centralized power body - a baby brother for the Council of Ministers. Likewise unelected, likewise undemocratic. And doubtless it will be brought up to behave in the same way as its big brother - autocratically and hegemonically. For the benefit of the citizens.

    Thumb Down

BERT = Bit Error Rate Tester

    As any techy doth know.

Or in the case of Ofcon, biG error rate, which would be about 100%.

    Don't worry about it.

By the time the EU manages to get its dirty little mitts on the spectrum it will have all been sold to the highest bidder.

OfCom, leading the world (and the EU) in CASHmunications.
