back to article Dying to make time lapse videos? No? Well, Microsoft is doing it anyway!

Microsoft has released a tool to let users produce timelapse videos, provided they're not Apple fanbois. Redmond posted the Hyperlapse tool for Windows and Android devices to let users shrink long videos down to shorter timelapse version. "Want to show your friends what you saw on that 12-mile hike you took last weekend or …

    Hyperlapse

Sounds like some horrible bowel syndrome!

  2. E 2

Indeed. Sounds too much like "prolapse".

    1. Crazy Operations Guy

Yes, that would be the joke.

  3. Paul Crawford Silver badge

If it works as well as the demo they did a year or so ago it will make such videos tolerable!

No longer having to sit though 30 minutes of tedious juddery video when you can swoop though in 5 minutes of vaguely interesting and stable footage.

    1. Cliff

Yes, as I recall it did far more than just taking every nth frame, it was pretty clever stuff.

      1. ThomH

Yeah, it was doing a partial 3d reconstruction of the scene and smoothing camera motion through that, wasn't it? I guess optical image stabilisation isn't always sufficient for the sort of variation you see between shots a few seconds apart, especially over a prolonged period. So the trick is to impute the extra information from all the frames between, through scene reconstruction.

But I also saw the video only once, a long time ago, so who knows?

@Paul Crawford: I think the market is those who wish to show their holiday..........

Just tried it on some GoPro skiing footage

Don't care what it's called, it's bloody good! Very, very impressive results.

    Nice toy for the kids.

Let's see if it is any better than the gazillion other apps out there.

  8. herman

Because with MS, the machines are too slow for real-time streaming...

  9. Guy Smillie

    Missing the point

This article completely misses the point of Hyperlapse. It shows some novel and very complex motion stabilization techniques. Saying that apps like this have been around for years shows only that you don't understand what this app is.

    No love for the 1020

It says it's not compatible with the Nokia 1020, which happens to have one of the best cameras out there. Fail.

    Paris Hilton

    give it a week

Wait and we will see the release of Hyperlapse porn...

3 weeks in Paris here we come...
