back to article It's 2014 and people are willing to blow $6.8m on things like Z.com

Z.com has been sold for $6.8m (£4.3m, 800m yen) to Japanese domain biz GMO Registry, putting it in the top ten of all-time domain name sales. As one of only three single-letter dot-coms available – the others being Q and X – the domain was previously owned by Nissan (for its Z-series of cars) and will be used by GMO Registry …

    Marketing Vomit

Strangely enough, from the list of all of these so-called high-market value domain names, I have never visited any of them.

The names are so generic that they become bland.

Which of the following sounds boring

    www.sex.com

    or

    www.hardcore-jiz-sluggin-leather-bound-skanks.com

See how generic just seems fruitless and unappealing... And yet they have deemed them to be worth a small fortune.

the first one is much easier to type, although I think most just type whatever they're looking for into the bar at the top, let the browser forward it to google and let the chips fall where they may.

Ah, you think that's how is done, yes? I see.

[ It's not online porn unless it involves an NNTP client, btw. ]

Well, the second let me down with a 404. :-(

Which was only barely less interesting than the first, I must admit. :-( :-(

Can't spare them right now. Trying to put together $7 billion to purchase "zz.com".

Can you IMAGINE how popular that will be? It's so amazingly 3D. And stuff.

zz.com - a double blade cutting edge website! What could be better than that?

Are domain names worth much at all?

At a client's the other day and witnessed him going to his desired site by typing facebook into the google search box. The Android browser also encourages this by scrolling the address bar out of view as soon as it loads. How many non-techies use the address any longer, particularly when browser writers are all combining the address field with search?

High value domains used for money laundering/tax evasion

IMO a lot of these high value domain purchases are simply money laundering and/or tax evasion.. basically people reduce the profits of some onshore entity by wasting a lot of it's profit on a domain name which gets bought from some offshore tax haven entity.
