back to article Microsoft exits climate denier lobby group

After a year of participating in the American Legislative Exchange Council, Microsoft has decided that even tangential alignment with a high-profile oil-funded lobby is not what it wants. ALEC has been criticised by groups such as Greenpeace for lobbying against state-level clean energy and climate policies in America. …

...that word. I do not think it means what you think it means

Last time I looked at the output of a "non-partisan" group, they'd run three different $700K ad series each attacking different Democratic senators, and then the Democratic president for something different, as their 4 most recent actions. Um, yeah...

"Non-partisan" has become a self-applied label meaning 'liar'. I thank them for their willingness to be clear about that.

So ALEC is actually partisan, I get it. Just like you are, espousing some case where poor honest Democrats get attacked under color of 'non-partisanship.' Like you could not find endless examples of such behavior from every side, including your beloved Democrats? Sure.

Still, it fits with the article author's own partisanship, using derogatory terms like "climate denier" with apparently no concern or shame whatsoever.

        Yeah it's really weird.

I've never met anyone that denied the existence of a climate.

Wow. Of all the places I frequent on the 'net, this is the last place I would have thought to find a republican troll. Seriously, this is a site for intelligent people, so your tripe is really not going to swing anyone's opinion here.

For those that don't know ALEC, here's a quick rundown. They create legislative templates of bills that are favourable to ALEC members, and which are then handed out to conservative politicians to try and pass in their home districts. Subjects of the bills range from "kill the gays" to "make sure convicted violent felons can still purchase guns" to "mercury in your drinking water is good for you" to "let Wall Street do whatever it wants" to "kill the abortion providers" to "climate change is Obama's mind-control program"... you get my drift. If there is any thinking involved or compassion emoted, it has nothing to do with ALEC.

Good luck in life Big John. Unlike you, I don't hate the other side. I just feel sorry for their confusion.

      @Notas Badoff RE: "non-partisan" groups.

Hmm, yes. I just love that expression. The way these groups use it reminds me strongly of a certain type one sometimes is unfortunate enough to run into in your local pub. You know, the type that prefaces his remarks with "I'm not political but...." and you just know that you are about to be subjected to an uber right-wing rant of a type that makes the average Daily Heil editorial sound positively liberal by comparison..

@Arctic fox - "...and you just know that you are about to be subjected to an uber right-wing rant..." - as opposed to an uber left-wing rant? Which is ok? A word comes to mind, hang on, it's...it's.... oh yeah, hypocrite!

… or maybe, just maybe, most of the rants are actually right-winger nuts and thus that's what you'll assume you'll be served with when someone utters those words? Kind of like hearing "Mainstream Media" these days will automatically flag whoever utters those words as a right-winger nutcase in the US, even though dissing the "mainstream news sources" is usually something done by the left-wingers in most parts of the world. Just ask my countrymen about Ukraine, and they'll tell you that all the news are being manipulated by the US war machine and that Putin is telling the truth, yadda yadda. But in the US, it's "the MSM is defending BHO".

Rather appropriate considering the overwhelming evidence for global warming these days. Pretty much no one but Fox News viewers can be denying reality anymore.

For instance, this week we find that the rate of Greenland and Antarctica ice loss has doubled in only 5 years:

Re: ...that word. I do not think it means what you think it means

Regarding the slowdown — not a "pause," actually — in overall global warming, there's an interesting paper that was just published in Science; from the paper's Abstract: "We found that the slowdown is mainly caused by heat transported to deeper layers in the Atlantic and the Southern oceans, initiated by a recurrent salinity anomaly in the subpolar North Atlantic. Cooling periods associated with the latter deeper heat-sequestration mechanism historically lasted 20 to 35 years." Worth reading if you're interested in a reasoned attempt to derive a scientific analysis of the "stair-step" nature of global warming over the past century or so — although some caution that the data sets are not yet robust enough to give the analysis a high likelihood of being the definitive answer to the "pause puzzle."

I've seen the graph and it is a pause. No rise in 17 years. And if you look closely, on the far right hand side, it's about to drop - fast and hard. I have as much evidence for this as you have for your famous hockey stick graph. Oh, wait. The hockey stick is a known fraud. It seems I have a lot more evidence for my point of view than you have for yours.

Thus indicating you don't actually understand the criticism. AGW skeptics are generally unconvinced by the degree to which human activity is a driver of global warming, not that it exists. No matter how many times actual arguments are made, people still trot out this argument as if it solves everything.

    funded by "oil" = evil

but funded by snake-oil = savior of mankind?

"Green" energy and control pundits are the farm animals wanting to take down the Big Oil farmers, talking big but really about moving themselves and their profits and power to the top when they couldn't do it any other way.

2 legs bad, 4 legs good. Soon after the "green lobby" wins, it's "some animals are more equal than others."

We need to adapt. But we need to be smart. No one with a big agenda can be trusted outright. Problem is, you're still a bloomin' idiot when all you do is decide which trendy party to be part of and accept everything from them as "truth", and take all practical limitations and warnings of such as "heresay".

Trading "Scientists" and "Consensus" for "Priests" changes nothing but the conceit. Science doesn't need a priesthood, but most everyone falls on their "statements of authority" instead of actually doing a little research of their own. If it's real research, it's open. If it's hidden, there's a problem. Monsanto, for example.
