back to article Oi, EMC users! HALVE your weight with this WEIRD OLD TIP

HP has released a product to import data from ENC VNX and CLARiiON CX4 arrays into its 3PAR storage, allowing customers to move to Meg W's StoreServ arrays – and, at least according to HP, dealing with storage obesity en route. It's called HP 3PAR Online Import (HP3OI?) and HP claims it allows users to perform self-directed …

Marketing is easy; it’s the execution and fine print that matters

    Does it?

"involves either data migration tools that consume host resources and impact application performance or necessitates the use of costly additional hardware appliances."

Does it? Since when? Simply use SANCopy between two EMC arrays and no host resources are required. Also you can use SANCopy to migrate from HP storage to a VNX/VNX2 and again no host resources are used. Everything is array based.

      Re: Does it?

“We (strongly) urge customers to read the fine print and carefully evaluate the claims of so-called 'online migration capabilities'.

That statement could just as easily be aimed at EMC SANCopy ;-)

      Re: Does it?

The point being if it takes a full data migration to get from Clariion/VNX to VNX2 then why bother, HP give you a free license to migrate and also have a superior offering in 3PAR so why go to all the effort for VNX2, which really only amounts to a rebranding on VNX.
