Redundancies at big tech firms, including both HP and Dell, were big news this week. At HP, the company has refused to rule out making roles redundant in the UK and then shifting them to parts of Europe where average salaries are lower. Corporate PR Clare Loxley said eloquently: It's a mixture of activities [in the …

Re: RE: Re: Sign This Petition!!!

I think online activists should really take The Regs words at heart, and organize real-world events instead of online petitions. 100 people holding signs is infinitely more newsworthy and likely to succeed than an online petition with 100 000 signatures.

Most things the net gets upset about are pretty valid concerns, and that outrage is just wasted on petitions.

Failing ability to get even a small marching band together, and I hate saying this, "twitter storms" are effective. For some bizarre, unfathomable, mind-boggling, reason, journalists are really impressed by Twitter and breathlessly cover what's trending (and, as a bonus, Twitter can be gamed with bots, further reducing the need for IRL support).

    But petitions are useless.

if you want the ultimate in slactivism, just pray for what you want to happen.

[and you get to feel even better than signing an online petition]

    "Petitions are useless"

Very true - a hundred people with signs *are* infinitely more likely to succeed than an online petition. Of course, infinity times zero is still zero. It's depressing,

Not sure why that's funny. You can find an 'English Breakfast', 'Fish and Chips', a 'Sunday Roast' or a 'Christmans Dinner' for instance in pretty much any first world country and many of the rest...

"... officers can scan a room ... other stats in an instant."

So facial recognition now works reliably? Last I heard it still needed a few more years of false promises and false positives.

Remember when 'they' promised to pan a camera across the Superbowl crowd and ID known criminals?

Finding the criminals at the Superbowl is easy, just look in the corporate boxes.
