"Just what kind of innovation will be undertaken at the centre is not clear."

Printer ink that costs more than rubies and diamonds doesn't innovate itself. More likely, HP are going to take the subsidy they are given, get the staff to shuffle paper that needs shuffled, then fuck off out as soon as they can.

    Memories of Motorola

Motorola had a centre in Adelaide that lasted about as long as the state government subsidies. Then WA offered subsidies and they shifted over there.

I wonder what subsidies are being offered to HP? As for "innovation", that's probably a fancy word for contract software development for third parties. Just like Motorola.

    ironic

isn't Carly/Cathy/whatshername still mass sacking in Oz ? Certainly the remaining staff are waiting for the call from somewhere else, especially if its a job not in IT. Software development ? For what ? The world is awash with underpaid Android developers. Not much happening on Windows 8.x, so that must be it. Hunt up the M$ connection and check again.

    Cost

Given wages levels in Australia I have my doubts about this in the long term.

In the short term there are grants and software is portable.

auto-workers to retrain as software developers

From Holden V8s to Java, boy are they going to be disappointed...

Oh look a flock of backward flying pigs.

Whilst some might have the "right" thinking patterns &/or interest , years of work in an extremely union dominated workplace might not bode well for innovation or collaboration
