back to article Vote NOW to name LOHAN doomsday box

Right, you lovely people, the time has come to name our Low Orbit Helium Assisted Navigator (LOHAN) doomsday box – the device which will, if required, command the mission's onboard Iridium-Arduino sandwich to release the mighty helium-filled orb carrying our Vulture 2 spaceplane aloft in case of emergency. How about...

      Button

      Operated

      Orbital

      Balloon / Ballocket

      In

      Extremis

      System?

        Re: Too late for another?

I had a similar thought, given its rugged construction:

        Battleworthy

        Object

        Oriented

        Breakaway

        Interface (for)

        Emergency

        Separation...

I want a list of the NSFW ones

You still must have a raftload of NSFW backronyms that were submitted.

Can we get a post of those for shits and giggles? Even if they aren't in the running to be the 'official' name...

Re: I want a list of the NSFW ones

I came up with SCAT but the acronym was very poorly done (I won't bother to repeat it here - it was that bad), and so other than being somewhat more NSFW than most of these, it also failed in it's duty to actually describe what the function of the device was.

      I failed :(

Then check out the comments section on the article about building the device here - http://forums.theregister.co.uk/forum/1/2013/08/20/iridium_arduino_sandwich/

Its a crime that LADYGARDEN didnt make it :(

I saw those, but there MUST be more.

        I know because I submitted:

        :P

    Thumb Up

A difficult choice - I liked ARMADA, but really, it's a bit tame considering the rest of the backronyms associated with the project, so I went for BRASTRAP

    1. Greg J Preece

I went for BRASTRAP because it just works so well in a sentence.

      "LOHAN's lost the plot again."

      "OK, pull the BRASTRAP."

    Brastrap for me

But Scissors came a close second. I suppose in a game of Paper Rock Scissors Lizard Spock Brastrap, scissors should have won, but hey ho..

    No recursive backronyms

It saddens me that none of the proposed backronyms features recursion, like, say, "Abend Button Escapes Near Doom". What ever happened to that fine geek custom?

It got associated with Linux, that's what happened to it...

      Re: No recursive backronyms

Easy enough with my suggestion (OOPS).

Prepend one of several letters to get your recursion: H, L, N, O, P, W... some work better than others, but I didn't feel that it was needed.

    Psychostats

The voting stats so far show a definite swing......

and a comment about the psychology of Reg commentards, incidentally I voted for Brastrap along with 202 other people with a penchant for juvenile humour, my excuse is being old enough to be approaching my second childhood ( not that I really need one).

      Re: Psychostats

I voted for it because the actual sentence is the most unforced. It seemed like the only one that could be a 'found' acronym.

      That, and boobies.

      1. John Gamble

        Re: Psychostats

The unforced style did catch my eye too (also my favorite, SWIFT, which had the best unforced style, didn't make it to the voting list).

Plus the mild rudeness (as opposed to gross rudeness) was a plus.

Too late, but I'd go for : BIEBER

    Button

    Immediately

    Effects

    Balloon

    Emergency

    Release

    1. Dave Fox

Or even better perhaps, a recursive acronym:

      BIEBER=

      BEIBER

      Immediately

      Effects

      Balloon

      Emergency

      Release
