Hmmm

The US Government agencies have been doing this for a while now, but only to US companies.

Interesting reading this list :

BAE Systems - sort of British, not really though does more US work with its segregated US arm than anything else

Lockheed Martin - American

HP - American

BT - British

Thales - French

Cassidian - Part of EADS and German

CGI - Canadian

Selex - part of Finmechanica and Italian

Rolls Royce - are they still British owned?

So thats UK tax payers money propping up the security of non-UK companies when almost certainly all of those are getting support from their parent nations already.

Couldn't they have picked some Brit companies? Or aren't their any left with anything worth stealing?

  No. Time was when we did have a good aerspace and military manufacturing capability. Now there's nothing left. I doubt BAE could design an aircraft on their own now, and I can't see China hacking into them to secure the twenty year old designs for the Typhoon, or the forty year old design of the Hawk trainer.

BAE is British. And specifically the part of BAE involved in Cyber (Detica) is very British
