back to article Blind activist Chen given spyware-laden iPad and iPhone

An NYU professor is claiming that blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangchen, who staged a dramatic escape from house arrest and fled to the US, was given an iPad and iPhone loaded with spyware on his arrival at New York University last year. The self-trained lawyer was imprisoned and then held under house arrest for years after …

"pressure from China as it looks to finalise a lucrative Shanghai campus there."

As opposed to, say, a lucrative Shanghai campus in Bolsover.

That's not spyware, that's the 'find my phone function' and the 'up loading to a server' is just the back up on iCloud.

Though I think the NSA probably had access to it.

Where post grads will work 90 hour weeks for $1 a day?

As for Bolsover, that would never happen. They fear The Beast

    This guy had no chance

    Whats his choices?

    1) Being given Chinese hardware was always going to be risky.

    2) If he bypassed the Chinese then the NSA would have been snooping on him anyway.

Re: This guy had no chance

The NSA were certainly spying on him anyway.

    WTF?

    Working as designed

"NYU technicians found spyware which could allow a third party to track the location of the device and additional password-protected software apparently backing up stolen info to a remote server."

That'd be Find my Friends and iCloud then.

So New York University are building a campus in Shanghai and I also just heard the other day that Zhejiang University are building a campus in London.

Am I the only one who finds this whole idea absurd? Building a university campus in a different country? Is this a recent thing to be happening?

It isn't recent. Universities do it directly through building a campus or through partnerships with unis in the host country to foster relationships between the two countries. Most of those I'm familiar with focus on graduate studies where the student gets to advance their studies while living in a foreign country with a 'safe' factor and a touch of home. The students often go directly to work in the host countries as they are comfortable with the culture.

      I think you'll find there's already a Chinese university in London - it's called Imperial :-/

    So who? Chinese? USA?

I figure the NSA doesn't need spyware, they can just tap his internet connection.

But then the same is true when he contacts people back in China, the Chinese can do what the Americans do.

Is it the CIA, and maybe they only have limited access to what the NSA has?

    Or the CIA's Chinese counterpart?

Would the South Koreans or Japanese stoop this low?

We really need to know what spyware to know what to make of this.

NSA is headed by the military. I suspect inter agency rivalry .

He should have laughed and asked why he was being given fisher price toys for serious business!

Accepting "gifts", yeah they was nothing behind that. I'd have thought those intelligent enough to work for a uni would have more common sense.

Though I know that academia does not have any common sense. They specialise in a subject and are just as stupid as joe public outside that relm.

Can't these snooping agencies get their acts together?

I mean why should China spy on the dude when it could buy the stuff from ** of * nsa anyway?

It seems a daft duplication or multiplicity of time, resource and effort no?
