    3/4 of the Earth's population live under oppressive regimes. Unless steps like these are vigourously stopped the Internet will cease to be anything but a domain of the Thought Police.

      Although in typical government fashion it's a harf-arsed solution, probably proposed by an IT consultant who's only qualification is he once wrote "Hello World" on the PC's at Dixons, and he went to School with "Dave"'s cousin.

    I realise that line was probably rhetorical, but with the analogy of Newton's first law in mind, has the answer to that question regarding such measures, be they realted to dead tree, broadcast signal or packet switched data, ever been yes?

      Of course not, and such censorship filters are always opaque - they won't tell you what is being filtered and why, other than the usual fake rant about "terrorists and paedophiles".

      Remember the Australian government's attempt at "protecting the children" via a filter that turned out to have gambling sites, general pr0n and a dentist's office on its list?
