back to article DOJ gives T-Mobile - MetroPCS merger the nod

The proposed merger of Deutsche Telekom's US subsidiary T-Mobile and regional carrier MetroPCS looks likely to go ahead, after the US Department of Justice (DOJ) allowed its waiting period for objections to pass without making a comment. "If its not that great, why did they try to buy it?"

Simple, effective and brilliant. There is no comeback to that.

      Sure there is:

"Because it's not that great ON ITS OWN, but when combined with our existing network, the resulting combined network can become greater than the sum of its parts."

The main reason AT&T wanted T-Mobile was to get more towers they could convert to LTE. Now both companies have to move more slowly due to lack of infrastructure for AT&T and lack of capital at the T-Mobile end.

At least this merger doesn't shake up the current wireless picture too much. The big boys are still on top, but now two of the smaller boys come together to become more of a player.

And to be fair, one of the two main points of the T-Mobile / MetroPCS merger is exactly the same. They have LTE already on the right frequencies for T-Mobile, and they also have 1900MHz spectrum on which T-Mobile can improve their existing 3G and (if they want) 2G networks. The merged network should be pretty decent. (The other main point was that a bigger customer base than either of these players have individually is a good thing).

How noble, Congresscritters caring about jobs

These are funny people, Representatives Adam Schiff, Al Green, Betty McCollum, Terri Sewell, et. al. Why funny? Because when their campaign contributor AT&T wanted to merge with T-Mobile they signed another letter (PDF) expressing exactly the opposite sentiment. Now a merger would kill jobs but then a merger would make jobs. Funny how opinions change when it would make a competitor of AT&T stronger.

Indeed, any Rep that has signed both letters should come as close to feeling ashamed of themselves as any of these politicians could ever manage to be.
