back to article New telescope tipped to spot 700,000 galaxies

“Please don’t attempt to interact with native wildlife … or collect flowers or stones” seems an odd thing to hear at the launch of a radio telescope, but those words were intoned today at the ribbon-cutting function for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO). …

"kangaroos are more prevalent than people"

Since there are ~60 million kangaroos in a country with a population of just over 20 million (nearly all of whom live in a few cities), you've described 99% of the surface area of Australia.

Of course there are more kangaroos than people

Otherwise how would we get to work when the regular kangaroo gets sick?

I am surprised they use dishes at all

The LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) is using a phased array approach. Much cheaper, no moving parts.

More detail please, we're technical folk here and can take it

Never mind the size of each dish, what is the size of the array (aperture)? What frequency bands will it look at?
