I really feel that one hundred and forty characters is way to few to properly describe any point of view that is actually worth talking abo

Nothing wrong with precis, but I do observe that Twitter is not a suitable forum for any point of view that is actually worth talking about

Between 20 and 30 million UK twitter users? Really?

That would be between 33% and 48% of the UK population having a twitter account.

Don't forget all those people who have twitter accounts for each family pet and all those fake celebrity twitter accounts.

And every bloody company seems to feel the need for one too, even though most will never use it and even if they did, the vast majority wouldn't give a damn about whatever twaddle they write and any time spent on it would be wasted.

My company has both facebook and twitter accounts - got an email the other day from our marketing types asking us to go onto facebook and 'like' the company. Unfortunately, our proxy bans facebook internally for anyone except the marketing types, for whom it is now an essential part of their working day.

    But...

You have no competition other than user apathy.

Much like Facebook as soon as the yoofs see their Mums and Dads start following them and their bands on Twatter they'll move on to other new toys.

It just takes time, most people are already getting pretty bored of FB.

Twitter's influential (it's essential for lots of politicians and media types) but this has never translated into income.

The latest stab at income seems to be closing its APIs - which I really don't understand. Ah well we'll see.

Twitter may be *used* by politicians and media types, but so is beer.

That doesn't mean it is either influential or essential.

If it were different enough that other site might be viable everywhere except the UK. But there's no way your average (vaguely lefty) UK Twit would be seen dead doing anything on there other than trolling.

Who would *want* to be a rival?

Since 2006, Twitter has consumed about $250m of VC cash. As far as anyone can tell, it didn't actually make a profit until last year and has earned just a fraction of that. Meanwhile, Farcebook has shown that at least one highly regarded player in this sector was almost pure bubble.

    Chinese Marketing

China’s most popular microblogging platforms from Sina and Tencent have way more registered accounts - over 300 million each

Anyone who has ever dealt with the Chinese knows that they can't be believed when it comes to marketing figures.
