back to article Anonymous releases sample of Australian telco's data

A campaign using the name and much of the iconography of activist group Anonymous has released data it hopes will embarrass the Australian Government into backing away from even considering data retention laws. Data has been posted to a number of file sharing sites and appears to have been released at around 2:00AM Sunday AEST …

    Accent?

That link has to have the absolutely, positively worst Orstrain accent I have ever heard.

The only thing missing was he didn't say Fosters or G'day Bruce.

    Epic Fail

Anon icon because... well, it's Anonymous.

      obligatory

      Is your name not Bruce?

That's going to cause a little confusion.

Mind if we call you Bruce to keep it clear?

"The attack is said to have exploited a flaw in an un-patched and forgotten AAPT ColdFusion server hosted at a third party, Melbourne IT. How that represents a method Australia's government uses is not explained."

But you explained it right in the sentence before.. It was un-patched and forgoten, like a lot of government IT systems.

      You got that right

re: "How that represents a method Australia's government uses is not explained."

Because government (and for that matter, every other) typically run an extract, load the live data into a development system and then do their development work against this copy of the data/systems. What is missing is the subsequent cleanup of this copy of the data.

It's happened before and it will happen again.

    Why...

...doesn't the might Anonymous do something useful for a change...like, say, penetrate Skype and prove once and for all that they aren't funnelling their data right to the NSA.

    WTF?

What's an unusual sleeping pattern for Anons?

Do you mean they post during daylight hours in Australian time zones and are silent during those long Aussie nights?

    Skiddies

"Chat in the room also indicated the group had difficulty preparing the data for release, as the size of the stolen data - 40 gigabytes and several hundred database tables – presented technical challenges."

I guess the little script kiddies couldn't find a pre-written script for it so had to do it by hand.

Or maybe downloading 40GB of data on an Aussie connection (Let's average it to 6Mbit/s) was just gonna take too f***ing long! An that's if they're in the country, who know what speed someone in Sweden would get.

That's why we need the NBN!

        Re: Bush_rat

They had the problem with processing it, not downloading it.

Processing data spread across multiple database tables requires a little bit more skill than just running a script.

If you don’t have the skills to write your own scripts to extract and merge specific fields from specific tables then you use something like excel to do it for you.

The point of which is: they did just that.

Don't underestimate them, but don't give them too much credit either.

This is outrageous, something must be done...

    ...to improve these fake accents!

    Was Meryl Streep busy?

    Oh wait.

    accent

perhaps it's intentionally bad to confuse anybody trying to recognise the voice?
