    Big Smile

Yeah I know trailers can be misleading, but goddammit that looks good. Ms Croft has come a long, long way since I first enjoyed her company in 1996.

Seems a bit silly now, but I almost pooped my pants when that first T-Rex arrived :)

      Re: Big Smile

I think we all crapped ourselves when that T-Rex appeared! As you say, looks quite tame now, but I can still remember the blind terror as I panicked, back-flipping down the valley with the finger held firmly on the fire button until the ammo ran out.

Can't view the trailer here at work - is this the one where she's in a tunnel/mine and there's lots of "push [] to avoid falling rocks" "push X to dodge exploding barrels" etc. Which I thought was a shame - while fun in God of War, it's not a game mechanic that I think the Tomb Raider series needs. Much preferred it in the original few where I was responsible for triggering the cool stunts and near misses, not following some pre-designed path and timing.

    Looks pretty good

Never played a Tomb Raider game, but tempted by this. Dishonored still the big game of the year for me...

Also, can someone show this trailer to those mouth-breathing self-abusers in the IO Interactive marketing department? Give them a kick in the genitals while you're at it please.

"Never played..." dear god man what have you been doing with your life?!?!?!?!

Dishonored looks awesome I agree, just checked out the latest trailer, which is brutal.

However 'drunken sailor' playing slowly in the background is a true kick in the genitals for me. The Leicester Square bells outside our offices play that song on the hour, every hour. Calling it annoying would be one serious understatement.

    Doubts...

The trailer looks nice from a game perspective. Very detailed and such.

But when it comes to personality I think they're taking a step backwards. Lara used to have a pretty confident personality. But in this game it seems she's been reduced to a "screamy" doubtful bimbo. I get that impression anyway due to all the moaning and "I can't do it", "I need help" that kind of stuff.

Stranded on an island? Sure, the Lara as I knew her would obviously call out for help. But not in a tone as if she desperately needed help or would otherwise perish. Lara could cope, or would /find/ ways to cope.

That whole aspect is IMO an important part of the persona Lara Croft and it seems as if that is taken away in this game.

I wonder... Remote island, being kept prisoner, hostage, etc. Far Cry 3 is also said to take place on a remote island where people go crazy... Tomb Raider meets Far Cry 3? That'd be cool :-)

      Re: Doubts...

Exactly my thoughts- She comes across as a lot more vulnerable here and I'm not sure that's a good thing. However, that could just be a part of the game- She could get progressively confident as the game progresses. Kinda reminds me of when I last the latest production of Evita- I thought the leads voice was very weak and not up to the job at the beginning but as the show went on it got more assertive (and impressive). I thought it was a very clever device.

      Re: Doubts...

I think the operative word is 'reboot', it seems to me this is the start of the road where Lara develops her skills and her confidence.

        Re: Doubts...

Description of the game is: "An intense and gritty story of the origins of Lara Croft and her ascent from frightened young woman to hardened survivor in Tomb Raider."

        Re: Doubts...

Yeah, I read as much but that is also the reason why I have serious doubts. For someone who has been playing Tomb Raider 1 it just doesn't add up. She went "mental" when her parents died, that experience made her into the woman she was.

        This otoh...

I see everything which modern gameplay seems to fancy; I see boobs (sort off), I see gore, I see violence. Yet I don't see anything which would make this game stand out, at least not for me.

Action, violence and such were never what made Tomb Raider one of my favorites. The puzzles, the suspense (especially this!) and the coolness factor of Ms. Croft. "Pierre, you litterbug"... Priceless.

      Re: Doubts...

I think this is one of those 'reboot' things, where it's about Lara becoming the Lara we know...

So it starts with Lara being a "screamy" doubtful bimbo, who has to learn to cope by hereself to survive.

Like James Bond becoming 'Bond' in casino royale... at the start of the film he's not 'Bond' at the end he is.

      Re: Doubts...

Completely agree, as soon as I heard the first girly scream I thought 'WTF! That's not how Lara screamed even when you drowned her by diving off too high a ledge'

Have to say, doesn't look as good as Uncharted series, which the trailer suggests it resembles (the big hanging off the downed plane, for example).

      Underwhelmed.

        Re: Doubts...

She also seems to have lost her posh English accent, maybe after this Lord Croft decided "Laura you're a whiny wimp with a cheesy mid Atlantic accent I'm sending you to the Marines and elocution lessons in that order" :)

Exactly this is taking lara back to her younger years before she became the character we knew and loved from the first game

    Thumb Up

    They seem...

...to have taken more than aleaf or two from Uncharted's book with this one. But then again, Uncharted took a fair amount of inspiration from earlier Tomb Raider games. Circle of life I suppose.

    Can't wait for this!

Played them all but the ones made by Core are still my favorites. I didn't like it when they simplified the controls and changed the mode from character oriented to screen oriented. The last, 2.5 d platform hopper, was a sad joke IMO. Trailer looks promising, let's hope they get it right this time.

. and kudos to Square Enix for a standards compliant website without Flash or Silverlight garbage.

    Little Wimp

Comes across more like some cheap Hollywood teen slasher/torture flick, the whole point with Laura was she was a self reliant bad ass, Angelina Jolie described the film part as being as close as a woman can get to being James Bond.

I get this is supposed to be an "origins" prequel but even so......

I misread the title. I thought they were running a promotion where those who pre-order could win a date with a actress pretending to be Laura Croft.
