Not just businesses
I think some people may need to consider how they'd react to their name being registered in this domain. ;)
Paris? I think you can work that one out...
A new company is planning to operate .sucks as a top-level internet domain, and its CEO says he expects big brands to embrace the concept. Vox Populi Registry is one of several companies to today announce that they have paid domain name gatekeeper ICANN a $185,000 application fee to try to get their hands on a new gTLD. The . …
It's not big and it aint clever. FFS - .sucks? .hiv? .wtf would be more like it! It's the ultimate in trolling, force image conscious companies to have to buy a million different domains to protect their image - either they pay up or the cyber squating trolls move in - its win win either way for the money grabbers and the tosspots! And for the rest of us, we have to put up with stupid fucking websites name now like www.libdem.fail just cos organisations will attempt to be cool and instead look like a bunch of knobcheeses! Aggghhh!
I'm all for these new gTLDs, but this one is clearly one built to cause money and to scam fearful companies into defensively registering a domain.
It could also be used for Cyber Bullying.
As a result, I hope ICANN tells them, "Thank you for your $185,000, but we are rejecting your application".
It will only cause ICANN embarrassment if they let this one through.
As with all things there are two sides to a story. As a consumer, I certainly want to know that a company I haven't heard of before are a legitimate operation who treat their customers with a degree of respect. And I will check out a company before risking my money.
On the other side of the fence, I work for a retailer and I have seen first hand people in our shops threaten to post negative feedback on forums in order to get a discount. And I have seen people post out right lies about us on forums when we have had good reason not to refund a product they have obviously broken.
If people have a grievance, they have no problem expressing their displeasure without this and I say that is a good thing. This firm are blatantly intending to extort money out of companies who just want to protect themselves from the kind of extortion I have seen and I hope ICANN sees that and rejects this application.
>> “I've worked for companies that spend a lot of time and money trying to run down dodgy internet bitch sites, and also heard from marketing teams that are looking for ways to collect the criticism to help approve the effectiveness of their communications"
Once upon a time, in the good old days, when I was your age &c, companies would/might be interested in criticism to help IMprove the quality of their PRODUCT.
Just sayin'
