As for negotiating - well there's this old fashioned idea of arresting and then trying suspects before convicting (or executing) them.
You know collecting evidence, making sure they got the right guy and not some sort of attention seeker. Was he working alone? That sort of thing.
Yes, especially as there is a big question mark as to why, given that the french security services already had him on a watch list, he wasn't apprehended after the first attack, thus saving the lives of all the subsequent victims.
Also, watching the footage of the french special forces, some of them would seem more suited to a Benny Hill video than an elite unit. Four police injured, one seriously, isn't a great outcome of the end of the siege either.

The point of terrorism is not to kill as many people as you can - it is to convince as many people as you can that you *could* kill them. It's more about getting publicity than anything else.
This guy killed several people despite being on an anti-terror watch list and got multinational TV coverage. That would appear to be the very definition of a terrorist win :-(

You could feel the collective sigh of relief from the right wing that it wasn't one of theirs. They came pretty close to having to face the reality that their hateful rhetoric can indeed cause harm.
Now they can get back to blaming multiculturalism while hypocritically condemning the killer for pursuing a course some of them advocate themselves. He'd be a hero to their cause were his own race and religion not so despised.

While perusing this thread on my blackberry, auto-zoomed into the content column, I sighed wearily. Rather than discussing actual politics, commenters had, predictably, devolved into a lurid spiral of tooth-gnashing (can you gnash one tooth?) hyperbole.
Finally, I reached the thread's nadir, and at it a post that would have been more at home on a CNN comment page than here. With every sentence, my mouth gaped in ever-more gaping gapiness; before long, I could read no more. Not because I couldn't stomach the invective - I had my political stomach removed some time ago after a particularly nasty incident with a Ralph Nader supporter - but because I had, just -had- to know the answer to a single question: Who might have the hate within him to write such furious invective, the gall to consider it rational, and the chutzpa to, upon producing a venemous screed, use its own repugnance to justify classifying anyone disagreeing as a baby-chomping pantywaist?

At least your Torch has a touch screen. Whilst I can do such things as browsing and reading/editing MS Office documents on my work BB Curve, I usually switch to my Android phone for browsing. So we have several black and arabic soldiers murdered, and then a couple jewish kids and adults. That reeks of far-right extremism, more precisely the Front National and it's well-known hatred of anything dark-skinned or jewish. And then the claimed killer is found to be a Jihad-type nutter? How does that fit with the murder of arabic and black people?
I find his death rather convenient for th police. I mean that wouldn't be the first time that an innocen albeit idiotic extremist claims responsibility for someone's crime in order to look like a hero to his "friends".

I don't really see anything fishy here. Islamic terrorist vs right-wing terrorist would have always been the most likely options. For what it's worth, my first thought when I read about the paratroops being killed as well as the Jewish people was that the two were connected (especially as it turned out that they were reasonable close geographically) and that it was likely to be related to the Middle East/North Africa. On finding out that the paratroops were all (or mostly) arabic/black, I still didn't feel that my assessment was wrong.
Islamic terrorists don't really care about race (or religion for that matter), only the symbols they are attacking, so the race of the paratroops isn't really that significant a factor.
It turns out I was right, but I accept I could have been wrong. I think, though, that there are many who really wanted it to be right-wing terrorists (including the BBC) and jumped to that conclusion, never entertaining the alternative, so I imagine there is some disappointment now.

I'd say it probably was a factor. Being of African/Arabic descent, they'd be seen as being traitors to their race/religion and therefore even more deserving of hatred than white-skinned 'infidels'.
He sent the email, and murdered the moped seller 10 day, yes TEN days before the police tracked the IP and surrounded the house. During those 10 days he shot up the school kids.
And this is a guy who is supposed to already be on a watch list and under surveillance!!

I wonder how fast his IP would have been tracked if he's be reported for downloading a Justin Bieber track instead of murdering a moped seller?
