back to article Cray shrinks XE6m supers down to a rack

Cray tried to sell Fords and Chevies when it launched the CX1000 entry supercomputer clusters launched back in March 2010. But to make its life easier, and to help bolster sales of its XE6 and XE6m supers that are based on Cray's own high-speed interconnect and software stack, the company has figured out how to shrink a Lexus …

That should help AMD some more

More Opteron 6200 sales is a good thing for AMD/Cray and consumers.

I'm from 'oop north' too, and also never heard the term 'Scads' before!

Guess you probably further North than I am (West Yorkshire).

    Call me old fashioned ...

.. but their current "supercomputers" are no such thing. They're just a load of PCs glued together. Pretty uninspriing stuff. Where are the specially designed SIMD & MIMD cpus of old?

      Who wants those?

They are not more powerful than a single general-purpose core of today.

"They are not more powerful than a single general-purpose core of today."

Really? So I guess the people who design massively parallel GPUs on modern graphics cards are wasting their time and should have just stick an x86 on the board instead? Wow, you should send them your CV , imagine how much money you could save them!

    Boo!

I'm not buying another one until they dunk it in a tank of coolant, stick a VAX front end on it and most importantly pump the coolant over a Cray logo externally with a spray bar and backight it in purple. I miss the Cray2 :(

Lots of good news from AMD's Financial Analysis Day

Wow, AMD has a ton of new products on the way and more in development for everything from tablets to servers. If they can get GloFo ramped up life should be very, very good.
