An online game that invites surfers to disclose potentially sensitive information has returned in a slightly different guise, two years after its first appearance. A viral game that surfaced on Twitter back in May 2009 encouraged users of the service to come up with their "porn star name" – which was made up of the name of …

    old and misanthropic

but these slack-jawed droolers would be far better off trying to fill the void between their ears than taking part in this kind of thing. Either that or let me kill them all with a variety of sharp things

    yours sincerely

    FAIL

    but ...

I never give the correct answer to these questions anyway. For example my mothers maiden name is "!lP5bqZwqw"

Or it is as far as online services are concerned.

      @JimmyPage

How do you remember it though?

I've tried using various facetious answers to this type of question and always ended up forgetting what I used for which question.

        Seriously

OK, I don't use that string ... the point is that just because the site *asks* you for mothers maiden name, there's not reason for you to use the real one (which is fairly trivial to winkle out anyway). So use an easy to remember string (e.g. "Churchill") which wouldn't be obvious to a phisher.

The best sites are the ones which allow *you* to define a question, and supply the answer.

WTF?! "Two years after its first appearance (...) back in May 2009"?!?!

Oh, come ON, El Reg, you lot should all know that variations of this game have been going on for at least 15 years at this point.

Jesus. What next, a story affirming that they've got that Interweb thing on computers these days?

    WTF?

    Wait...

...are you saying my stripper name *can't* be found by combining my mother's maiden name, the make and model of my first car, my birthday, my wedding anniversary and the security number on the back of my credit card?

And I thought Smith Ford Escort 01/03/1982 07/06 716 was such a snappy name....

What's your sci fi robot name? Add your default password to your bank card pin to make it!

    Errr...

What I don't get, is after you've 'discovered' your porn name, why you need to type it in anywhere?

    stripper name

I usually use my stripper name when filling out website registration forms ... why the h3ll do they need my real name anyway?

[watched Reg admin scurry away to check my account....]

I've often been more than a little miffed at the "personal question" gimmick.

"Password too difficult for attackers to guess? Here's an alternate authorization that they might do better at."

Besides, the stripper name thing is a lie. The pet+street address thing is your DRAG name.

Those questions are one of the worst things that has happened to Security. Most of the questions frequently the sorts of things you'd talk about with friends and acquaintance. So if you want to keep them secure they are actually limiting you're social life. You should have to be afraid of talking to people you don't know well about your first pet or your first car.

Maybe if they were questions like " What is your favorite sexual position?" at least they would be something most of us don't normally talk about with strangers, but even that would open you up to attacks from unhappy exs.

Fail, but not quite the FAIL implied.

I really, really HATE sites that don't let you set up your own custom security question. "My pets name" is stupid (see Paris Hilton's SideKick hack); street, teacher... Easy for anyone who knows you; and "mothers maiden name" ain't worth using for Latin Americans and Spaniards as we use *both* surnames; my mother's "maiden" surname is right there in my ID.

While I might not do these stoopid games, I wouldn't risk my security questions by doing so. I'm smarter than that!
