back to article Oracle rolls its own NoSQL and Hadoop

There's no shortage of ego at Oracle, as evidenced by the effusion of confidence behind the company's OpenWorld announcement of the not-so-humbly named Big Data Appliance. And then there were the o'erweening keynote presentations by some of the software giant and systems player's top brass on Monday, which included a montage …

    Awesome for R!

As Oracle discovers the power of R as an analytics tool, the market can anticipate broader adoption and more innovation. Oracle has an impressive record of successfully folding in new technologies, so it can play a valuable role in bringing R into more businesses. Awesome news for the R community and Revolution clients!

      Please avoid marketing in posts

Ok, the first sentence was not that bad. You could pass as a simple R fan who wants to see some big technology player pushing for your favorite language.

      But then you wrote:

"Oracle has an impressive record of successfully folding in new technologies"

Which is an unashamed compliment to Oracle. Still laughing at that while trying to find a single technology outside the DB kernel where Oracle has some significant market share AND is gaining share from the competition. Anyone can buy another successful business, cut costs and increase support fees, but that's hardly "folding in new technologies".. PeopleSoft? Siebel? Oh please.

Having said that, lots of people with commercial interests post in forums everyday without disclosing their relationships with the matters that are discussed. My compliments for leaving your signature and current position so that readers can understand what your comment is about. Shows an unusual level of integrity which in the end may compensate for the superficial and biased comment.

So, let me get this straight...

    Either:

    A) You have supercomputing needs, and can pay Larry shitloads of drinking vouchers.

    B) You are most things less than a major marketing / financial house or multi-national / globo-corp and can use *SQL, Hadoop if you really must, and RHEL / Ubuntu (without support) for zilch.

Or is my world just TOO SMALL? Just how many customers is he really trying to convince?

    NoSQL

Oracle already has BerkelyDB. What do the other toys bring to the party.

Point of order Mr Prickett-Morgan - there is no such thing as "unstructured data". That is what we call noise A point that the social media fire hose is only happy to prove. You have to sift it for stuff that fits a schema before you can call it data. The elision serves only purveyors of either whatever streams from the hose or of the snake oil that supposedly makes sense of it all.

    NoSql...

By the description it may well be Oracle Coherence.

    Its pretty simple...

Rumor has it that some of Oracle's largest customers have made a mandate... any new hardware purchased must be capable of running Hadoop. With this mandate, you now have an Oracle RDBMs appliance majikically made in to a Hadoop appliance.

    Its a hardware thing.

Sun err.. Oracle's answer to SeaMicro.

    "Big data"?

And there was me thinking M$ SQL Server was still the fastest growing commercial database! Oracle's traditional database market is being eaten from below so it's no wonder that Larry's trying to concentrate on "appliances" to try and lock his customers in.
