EVA is on life support

The "new" P6000 EVA is nothing to write home about.

Same old PowerPC architecture, same old XCS code, no support for flash drives at launch, poor backend bandwith.

Not to mention the lack of autotiering, compression and deduplication.

And still no VMware VAAI support ?

Eva is on life support, soon to be buried.

  Does it offer the same stable, performant, simple to manage advantages as the EVA? YES!
  
  Does it offer some new functionality such as migration between tiers, thin provisioning, etc? YES!
  
  Is it the most exciting array on the market? NO!
  
  Is the P6000 priced at an incredibly attractive level? YES!!
  
  People have not bought EVA's for a past few years because of functionality. They have bought it because it is dead simple to live with, and it is good enough. If you had an old EVA and were happy with that then you'll love the new one. If you didn't have an EVA then if you need all that fancy stuff then 3PAR, if you don't and you want a lower cost of ownership then EVA. There are hundreds of 1000's of EVA's out there, it's going nowhere!

    Stable - No
    
    Many reports of issues with EVA 4400 firmware over the last year
    
    Performant - No
    
    Old 32bit architecture - No VMware VAAI hardware offload - No flashdrives - Poor backend bandwith
    
    Simple to manage - Yes
    
    Command View EVA was the leader in ease of use, but the competition has surpassed it
    
    with better tools for capacity planning, performance monitoring and application integration.
    
    Online lun migration and thin provisioning is fine, but that has been offered by the competition for several years already.
    
    A low price does not save the sinking ship.

      Stable - yes! In 10 year history, some minor issues around EVA4400 firmware around 2 years ago, now resolved and EVA has still DELIVERED 5 x 9's reliability as measured across its' installed base!
      
      Performant - yes! It offers about as good performance as you can get from a given number of drives. Not all customers want VAAI offload, or flashdrives. I see a very low % of arrays going out with flash currently. And if they are really required then there is 3PAR.
      
      Simple to manage - still market leader. Miles ahead of NetApp, EMC, etc.
      
      In storage world you get what you pay for! There is definitely a market for a proven, reliable, simple storage array at the right price. There are a hell of a lot more of fords sold than bmws or ferraris.
