back to article Stock-trading teen hacker jailed again over 2nd scam

A hacker jailed at 19 for a stock-trading scam has been jailed for three years over a new fraud, this time involving attempts to swindle a currency exchange out of $100,000. Van T Dinh became infamous in 2003, aged just 19, when he hacked into the account of another trader in order to offload worthless stock derivatives he had …

    D'oh!

"The unauthorised access was detected and traced back to an internet connection at the home Dinh shares with his mother in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania."

This is what has become of present day "hackers"?

There are now so many easy ways of disguising where an attack came from, but it looks like he wasn't even intelligent enough to use Tor. The guy deserves jail for his stupidity more than for his "hacking".

      isn't RULE 1 of hacking...

        "isn't RULE 1 of hacking"

That's not the club rule I know. I thought the first rule of hacking is: you do not talk about being a hacker.

(I think "Don't do it from home" could be the 2nd rule ;)

      Re: D'oh!

Indeed. The guy obviously has some degree of skill at this for managing it twice, but his knowledge when it comes to covering his tracks is pitiful!

There are plenty of open/unmanaged wireless access points about.

    Thumb Up

    Never ceases to amaze me.

Smart enough to appropriate thousands, but too stupid to spend a couple of bucks in a café.

Makes me wonder how many others have done it - properly - and are now taking it easy in the sun, surrounded by doting, bikini-clad strumpets...

Dammit! Where's my copy of "Hacking for Dummies"?

    a perfect candidate

This guy's total lack of morality sounds like he is a perfect candidate for a very successful life long career working in the stock market and banking, where he could use his total lack of morality to seek ever more ways to destroy peoples lives and screw people out of what little money they have, all for his own gain.

With soon to be two jail terms it sounds like he'll be fast tracked up the banking career ladder. :(

well arnt we all smart after the fact

I knew when I read that "from home" bit that 90% of the comments would be :

    "Fail"

    "amateur"

    "when I was a hacker..."

    "what a n00b"

inspite of 99.9% of readers hazing zero personal experience, never having attempted anything like this, for various reasons.

That said, it *was* pretty dumb.
