Porn stars are set to rally against the proposed .xxx top-level domain name outside the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) public meeting in San Francisco next week. The Free Speech Coalition (FSC), a porn trade group, has called a press conference and rally outside the Westin St Francis Hotel in Union …

With a slogan of ".XXX is bullshit!" maybe this is just a misunderstanding?

While I'm sure they will cater for lovers of juvencus excrement, I'm sure those with more conventional tastes will alo be catered for...

    resistance has been fierce?

    > Resistance to .xxx has been so fierce, from Christian groups as well as the porn business, that ICANN has had to create entirely new appeal and review mechanisms for processing the application.

      be careful

There's only 5 feet or so of pavement (sidewalk) in front of the Westin SF, step off that & you'll get flattened by a cable car. Wonder why they picked such a precise and impractical location, instead of just saying "Union Sq" ?

All seems a lot of pointless fuss by the FSC anyway. Of couse everyone's office firewall will block .xxx, but who's that going to surprise or inconvenience, honestly?

    WTF?

    Why?

"Resistance to .xxx has been so fierce, from Christian groups as well as the porn business, "

I don't understand why "Christians" would oppose this. I'm wondering why they aren't taking it further and requesting that after the passage of .xxx that ALL 'adult entertainment' be migrated to .xxx or shut down. That would make it so much easier to block/filter.

It seems the porn industry has it's lobbyists out in full force.

      read it as...

"American" Christian groups. I always find it makes more sense then.

Yes, your right. It's the sensible thing to do that makes sense, but American Christian groups are worried that .xxx would create more porn on the internet.

      . . .

You'd think that they might notice that they are protesting alongside the porn industry and start thinking that if the porn industry is trying to stop this they should be arguing in the opposite direction, but hey. Only in America.

      why Christians oppose PORN

      > I don't understand why "Christians" would oppose this .. mrobaer

Because that would lead to legitimising PORN, instead of feeling guilty over your porn stash, like a good Christian should do.

Indeed... Porn is bad... Wasting all that paper, DVD plastic and hard drive space on nudey prod material... You should be green and just shag an choir boy.

    WTF?

    curious

why would they be bothered that it will be easy to block porn on the interwebs via a .xxx domain.

surely the only reason why they would want it to be hard to block porn is so that you can accidently stumble uppon it or browse porn via your employers interwebs.

surely if you moved all porn to .xxx then an argument can be made that because it is so easy to block then less restrictions should be placed on the porn industry on the interwebs.

    1. Alastair 7

      No

I might be wrong, but I believe the argument has nothing to do with censoring content in the workplace or for the kiddies. It's the idea of censorship in the first place.

Take The Sun's Page 3, for example. Topless ladies, but the newspaper isn't on the top shelf. Should it be an .xxx domain? You might say not, others might say yes. Agreeing on standards of decency across the world is anything but simple.

    2. Gerhard Mack

I'm guessing it's because they don't care about your job

These are the people who go out of their way to find ways to make you stumble on it by accident. Remember this is the industry that brought us whitehouse.com and nasa.org(found both at different times by accident while in class a decade ago when I was at school).

I don't mind that porn is out there since what consenting adults want to spend their time and money on is their own business but I really do mind accidentally bringing up porn sites at inopportune moments when someone seeing me bring the site up can have unfortunate consequences (work, school etc).

      Christain issue with .xxx

The Christians see .xxx as recognition and legitimization of the porn business.

Not just a movie franchise, it could be applied to other websites as well. For example, I better quickly get www.theregister.xxx ;)

Not sure what I will do with it, but it would be a very good place to put outright filth like this...

"You'd think that they might notice that they are protesting alongside the porn industry and start thinking that if the porn industry is trying to stop this they should be arguing in the opposite direction, but hey. Only in America."

That would be logical. As a Christian myself, I really don't care about the .xxx domain or porn itself. I figure it doesn't pertain to me or mess with anyone's rights, so just leave it be. Removing the object of an addiction from the person who is addicted does not cure the addiction. Instead more time should be spent helping to remove the desire for the addictive object in a healthy way. It doesn't matter if there are 100 or 100,000,000 porn sites out there to someone who isn't interested in it. Just try to count the amount of twitter feeds, blogs, youtube channels, etc, that are not followed. :)

I used "Christian" earlier in that format alluding to the crazies out there who always go too far, so far that they'd be hard pressed to even be called Christians at all (ie; Westboro Baptist Church).

    ICANNt or ICANNot

Why does the Internet community at large put up with this useless insider club power grab?

It seems everything they do is a complete fuck-up.

They do not own the Internet, the people who paid for it do, so ICANN should go the fuck home and get an easy check somewhere else.

    Stop

A .xxx tld would be the beginning of massive censorship on the internet

In the past senators Max Baucus (D., Montana) and Mark Pryor (D., Arkansas) have already proposed to make the use of a .xxx domain mandatory for adult content. Stuart Lawley of the ICM registry has already stated that if the .xxx tld is approved they will start lobbying to make it mandatory.

This opens a huge can of worms. What exactly is adult content? Hardcore Pr0n? Sites about breast cancer? Sex ed sites? A youtube video of women wearing bikinis?

Who gets to decide which sites can still use a .com domain and which sites will be forced to move into the .xxx ghetto? What about the owners of adult websites who have invested thousands of dollars into building a brand? What about their SE rankings? Do you really want to put thousands of people out of business simply because you don't like the product they are selling? Well, what if some Islamic extremist started closing down websites he didn't like? Or what if some extreme right Christian sect decided all sites about the theory of evolution are inappropriate?

And who will pay for all that? Surely policing the internet to make sure no one secretly put up some adult content on a .com domain would come at a cost. Do we raise the price of .com domains to pay for some new government agency to police the .com tld?

If you allow the creation of a .xxx tld and as a result the eventual mandatory segmentation of the internet based on content, you'll wake up one day in a world where the internet will no longer be the 'ultimate free press'.

    Voltaire once wrote:

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

If you believe in freedom of thought, freedom of speech, than don't keep silent.

Send " @ICANN REJECT the .xxx tld! #icann " on twitter.
