back to article CFOs are crossing fingers and hoping a second wave of COVID-19 does not appear, says Gartner

If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. If Benjamin Franklin's aphorism* proves to be true, businesses should be worried by the latest research from Gartner. The research group says 42 per cent of chief financial officers have no contingency plans for a second wave of COVID-19. That means it is not in the financial …

Leave it to Gartner to get people to pay them big bucks to state the obvious. Nice work if you can get it.

Yeah, Gartner - these are the people that used to double- and triple-count their survey responses. I didn't think anyone believed them anymore.

Of there will be no second wave.

It's not like the 1918 influenza came in multiple waves, or the black death or even "regular" flu.

This is the first time, however, that the medical profession and scientists have known what they are doing, and governments are taking them seriously.

One can only hope it's a bit like gas attacks in WW1 -the first time they were effective. The second time - better tactics, supply of working gas masks, Germans got clobbered.

Oh - supply of working gas masks. British government. Forget I said anything.

Yeah, except in the USA, where the so-called President has now denied ever suggesting that people should ingest or inject bleach, after thousands of calls to health hotlines and some people actually stupid enough to try it.

But, as usual, the Supreme Asshole will not take any responsibility. The excuse, now that that bombshell of his own making blew up in his face, is that it was satire.

Sorry, bud, being able of satire requires intelligence, and you have failed to qualify there.

I will guess this is sarcasm because modern times being what they are...

There will indeed be a second wave. Nobody seems to realize the FIRST ISN'T OVER YET, but the U.S. is already easing quarantine.

Even worse, FT calculates the death numbers are WAY under-reported.

    If the CFO's are worried

then I really hope that they can slow down the inevitable headlong rush to open up again ASAP.

There will be lots of PHB's out there chomping at the bit to open their businesses again so that they can re-assert their PHB rules on their unsuspeting staff.

All I can hope is that the ones that get it in the 2nd wave are the PHB's that are pressuring for their business to open tomorrow rather than waiting a bit longer.

        Bob, M'dear;

I'm sorry your world is being shattered with all the incidents of Mr. Donald demonstrating his utter inability to cope with this simple, basic flu like event that will simply dissapear in April. One point you've missed here is that quite simply, the cost cutting, efficiencies and minimalism that has pervaded accounting for the last ooooh, 60 years or so has removed the old world standard in which hospitals always had 25% more beds on hand than they required. Simply put, since we've not seen a disease quite so communicable since we've been /sarc poisoning /sarc our children with MMR and DPT vaccines, the accountants (sadly from your concern about $$ I have to assume you are one) have slaughtered our ability to properly accomodate YOUR BLOCK CAP REQUESTS!!!!

        FAIL

        Sure, Bob

You tell that to the 1190 people who died yesterday.

By the way, when are you going to obey the orders of Your Dear President and inject yourself with bleach ?

Or do you have enough neurons to know that that is a bad idea ?

We already know you support Trump, despite every abysmally stupid thing he has said - which is basically everything he has ever said. Mentioning Hydroxychloroquine is really not necessary to get a clue.

Advocating the death of people you don't know just to excuse yourself from doing your civic duty to help others is the height of selfishness.

If that's how you FEEL Bob, then I suggest you do one of the following:

        - Swallow your pride (yeah right, as if that's going to happen) and try a different stack/role - I'm still getting scalper emails for permanent .NET web-dev roles at least twice a week... just' sayin' (again)

        - Volunteer at a hospital or mortuary - they could sure use the help and hey, if you end up getting COVID19, well that's just going to help build that good ole herd immunity, right?

        - Or, since you've obviously drunk Mr. Trump's kool aid, try drinking - or injecting - something else he suggested.

        Re: SWEDEN GOT THIS RIGHT.

        Not really.

Like most countries, Sweden reacted late, slow, but also couldn't be arsed with the economic hassle of lockdown. Their choice. We'll see how it plays out. It's way too early in this outbreak to flag their particular social experiment as success or failure.

Their death rate may seem low in absolute numbers, but that's perhaps because they have a relatively small population, and much of the population is social distancing anyway, wearing masks, avoiding large gatherings, working from home etc. In a lot of ways the population has locked itself down.

Compared to their Nordic neighbours, their death rate is much higher than countries with lockdown.

    CFO Planning

And, six months ago, how many CFO's had a major worldwide pandemic virus and government orders for everyone to stay at home in their plans?

None. Nada. Zilch. But we tackled it as it came and, so far, appear to have survived and ready to come out the other side. Next time/wave round we will be a bit better prepared. And have more loo rolls in stock.

Do these analysts really get paid to "research" and write this crap?

Wouldn't have much mattered if you DID plan for it. Consider the restaurant/theatre chain that actually had "pandemic insurance". Fecking insurance company (and their backers over your way, some place called "Lloyds") tried REAL hard to back out of paying, saying the contract didn't actually name "COVID-19" as a covered pandemic (but it did mention SARS *and* any mutations of it, and guess what COVID-19 is?)
