back to article Servers sales are up. Nope, you read that right

In the server sales growth stakes the big Chinese brands appear to be winning the war against their US rivals, at least if Gartner’s latest stats covering calendar Q2 are to be believed. The global market edged up 2.8 per cent year-on-year in revenue terms to $13.93bn as unit shipments climbed 2.4 per cent to 2.82 million …

    Correction

"“The growth for the quarter is attributable to two main factors,” said Jeffrey Hewitt, research veep at Gartner."

Should read "“The growth for the quarter is attributable to two main factors, neither of which we managed to foresee despite them being pretty damn predictable” said Jeffrey Hewitt, research veep at Gartner."

      Re: Correction

The surprise was that the market grew at all - between a drop in enterprise spending of almost 10% amongst the top two vendors and the big cloud providers already spending heavily over the last few years, there was a lot of inertia to overcome.

    The Oracle doesn't shine anymore?

The SPARC server business no longer even merits mention?

They haven't figured on server lists for 5+ years unless reported under non-x86.

    Epyc disruption

AMD's Epyc will figure in a major server market disruption this winter. At least one of these top 5 will shake out by spring.

Well, I would expect Dell, HPE, Supermicro and Lenovo all to sell an AMD server option. IBM is not going to and I doubt it's a fit for Cisco either.

    The wheel turns...

This is interesting. Big US companies have swallowed the hype, and are trying to outdo each other in the new markets by pushing Cloud and abandoning servers. It's only a matter of time before people realize that Cloud isn't a panacea and that there are advantages to having what used to be called mini-computers, and by then the only people making them will be the Chinese.

Will we reach a point where US companies are creating knock-off clones of Chinese servers to sell to government agencies?

Please, please, can we have some Chinese Sparc clones. This time with documentation so they can be supported by OpenBSD.

just migrate your workload to 21st century architectures and stop being so ideological!

No - the US companies will put their own badges on Chinese products and sell them to the US government for 3 times the price!!!

isn't HPE already doing that with badge-engineered versions of chinese network switches?

    Not a lot a million

How are these major companies supposed to survive when the total server market is 14 billion a quarter. I expect more death and destruction among hardware manufactures
