    Ummm

AWS has its own IoT offering. SF will be building an IoT offering on top of its competitor. So, in the race to the bottom with all the other IoT offerings, SF seems guaranteed to be more expensive and basically controlled by someone they compete with. Good thinking. Or, is their cloud so crap that they had no choice, but a bad one?

      Well

Azure would be worse. MS has IoT and CRM and Marketing and Customer Service and Social Engagement and Yammer, etc. Would be complete competition, not just IoT. No, they were stuck and stuck badly, and they probably looked at all clouds and settled on AWS because it was the least of the evils and had a truly global backbone.... They picked the cloud that sucked the least for them.
